Download & Replay on HDX/nDac Noob Question

Posted by: GraemeH on 25 November 2012

OK.  Having ripped my collection to the HDX I'm tempted to try GRRR! as a high quality download from Linn but have not a clue what to do.....

Ideally I'd like to put it on a memory stick but a) how do I do this? b) where do I plug it in - HDX or Dac?

I'm a total novice so be gentle please....

Thanks,

Graeme

I believe that the HDX will accept HDX ripped files ( such as transferred from a NAS).

I also think that the latest software update allows for a seperate partition that can hold non HDX files such as mp3 etc

Only on the 2tb version.  There is no software update that sets this up on the 1tb versions of the servers.

Correct!

Graeme,  Just get some larger file size USB sticks ie: 32 or 64 gb and you can have up to four of these plugged in the back of the HDX carrying your hi-res and downloaded stuff.  Should keep you going for a bit. Alternatively if you think you need more space, then a network attached storage device may be the way to go? Possibilities are endless with the HDX!

Enjoy!

Or go to Plan C, which is to send the unit back to Naim to be upgraded with the software and 2 tb hdd that would eliminate the need for a nas or the usb stick approach.

Just contacted naim about this. The cost of upgrade Is 250, but will have to be in new year due to current workload commitments

250 is quite reasonable!  It's quite a slick implementation and may keep you out of nas ownership for storing music to be played.

However you still absolutely need a way to back up the hdd . . . which I do nightly onto my nas.

64GB sticks could be problem. Wasn't there something with FAT32 only?

Yes, you can format a 64GB sick to FAT32 and still store 64 GB of data on it - but it can happen that only half of it will be recognized by the HDX.
