Question about ND5xs

Posted by: Alco on 01 December 2012

Hi guys,

My first question in the streaming-department. Could someone perhaps answer this question:

If I'd use my Ipod touch to control an ND5xs, and I'd like to scroll from A to Z in the Artist section, will the ND5xs show the artist on alphabetical order of first- or lastname ?

For example: Ry Cooder, will it be placed at R or C ?

I'm using a Squeezebox Touch for some years now and I'm used to browsing through my music collection, shown on alpabetical order of the Artist' first name. (and I'd like to keep it that way)

Thanks in advance

best regards,

Hi Alco,

It will sort Ry Cooder by the R, so based on first name. This is how Assett sorts and Twonky.

Don't knwo whether it is possible to edit the sorting in Assett in such a way it sorts from last name. In Twonky one cannot edit it.

Cheers,

Iver

Aha,...thanks Iver! That's good to hear.

Is it difficult to get a ND5xs to work ? I know that a dealer will instal it and make sure everything works as it should, but on the other hand I don't like the fact that I have to depend on a dealer.

(when for example: after a sudden PC crash, I'd like to be able to get it back working again myself)

A few months ago I had the chance to try a UnitiQute at home, but I couldn't figure out how to get the little bugger to work.  (only music from USB-stick)

I'm tempted to give the ND5xs a try, perhaps at the end of this year or early 2013.

Cheers,

Alco

Not quite true Iver. Twonky display however you organise your metadata when you are ripping the CD. For example, I change Bruce Springsteen to Springsteen, Bruce so it appears under S not B. This is especially useful for groups that begin with 'The' so they don't all end up under T. If you forget to do it when you are ripping, you can change it retrospectively with a program called mp3tag which is free to download. Hope that helps

Dear Alco,

In my case there was really no issue to "get the thing to work" :-). If works flawlessly. I think the most impirtant thing is that you have a proper NAS installed with the adequate software. If the NAS works ok, the ND5XS will recognize it immediately and start playing. Most ideal situation woould be to have the ND5XS hard wired to your network.

Same thing for nStream; works immediately. Strange enough, I never tried a USB stick with the ND5XS, but expect no issues there.

Don't knwo if you have a NAS, but if you considering one, have a look at WifiMedia in Arnhel. They install and test everything, so it is really plug and play when you unpack at home

Cheers,

Iver

If it's anything like my NDS . . . well I opened the box, plugged it in, connected to my home ethernet network and to my Nait XS, turned it on and, voila, it was up and running.  It found my music on my home network and was playing it literally within 60 seconds of turning it on.  I downloaded and ran the iPhone app (nStream) and it immediately found the player and all the music.  Could not have been quicker or easier imho.

"Strange enough, I never tried a USB stick with the ND5XS, but expect no issues there."

Funny, as it's one of the main aspects of the ND5xs that attracts me to try/buy one.

I don't have a NAS. I have my PC powered up most of the time, when I'm at home. So, I use my (XP) PC as a server. I also don't have/want a NAS because it would have to stand fairly close to my system, just as my router/modem already do, and I don't want even more boxes and cable clutter.

@ Ian and Iver: Thanks, luckily I already have and use mp3tag regularly.  Works fine.

@Bart: that are some reassuring words! Good to hear! thanx.

"Most ideal situation would be to have the ND5XS hard wired to your network"

Do you mean using a wired (Cat5) connection ?  I hope so, as I alread had that installed when I moved into my house, 2,5 years ago and routed the cable underneath the laminate skirting boards, to my system.

So, I have a proper length of Cat5 cable installed, ready to deliver some action.  (eventhough I've been using my SB Touch wireless)

Alco,

Having the streamer wired is particularly useful when you stream Hi-Res files (and you will come to that shortly believe me ). Streaming wi-fi, you can experience dropouts (short period of non-connection) with your Hi-res files depending on the resolution of the file (and the quality or strenght of your router). None of that happens when the streamer is wired. This greatly changed my appreciation of my SU. There are good threads on that subject throughout the forum.

I use a RJ6 cable. But choice of cable is a whole other subject (a can of worms???) and many here - and more experienced than me - will answer you.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy. I personally really do...
