Help with streaming to unitiqute from laptop

Posted by: CDI on 03 December 2012

I am using all naim streaming, wav files etc but have arranged for a unitiqute for a relative who has iTunes music files on a laptop - generally left on all day so no need for NAS, also not that many files. I have been running my old squeezebox touch for the relative to see if it is worth doing and this streams straight from the iTunes library. Do I need some kind of upnp software on the laptop to work with the unitiqute to play iTunes files?

I use iTunes straight from my MacBook (laptop) via an optical lead into my UnityQute.  Never had any issues with it.  Strongly recommended if the goal is simplicity.

Dear Richard,

I had no idea that that was possible.

I am using iTunes on a MAC Mini via USB connection an Arcam DAC and it works a treat. No complication it at all.

And superb music delivered reliably.

A Toslink optical cable seems to deliver the best ALAC quality from my Macbook Pro to my Uniti. However, since this is a streaming section, I can advise that Eyeconnect installed on the Mac will do the job wirelessly. Eyeconnect converts the ALAC to Wav and the SQ is pretty good. The ideal will be when Naim do a deal with Apple so that Airplay is recognised!

Richard,

Yes this sounds like an excellent and very simple solution. As a matter of interest, where is your Macbook located? I'm thinking in terms of selecting music for playback - if the Macbook is located on a rack with the UQ that is not adjacent to your listening position then presumably you would need to get up every time you wished to select a new track?

If you have another iThing you can probably run "Remote" and there is no problemo.

Adam,

Would that mean involving a network, or can an iPAD or iPhone link wirelessly to a Macbook directly and provide a display for music selection? To my mind it is the display element that is important here. It is easy enough to buy USB remote controls or keyboards to operate any computer remotely, but this is of little help if the screen is too distant to read.

Two points:

1: I got the impression you had no interest in digital replay - so don't understand why you would want to understand this - or raise questions on behalf of those who do.

2: I am assuming a network as - what is the point of a Macbook, etc if it doesn't operate in a network/internet environment?

I really, really haven't made much effort toward streaming, etc but, if my PC is running itunes, I seem able to control it via Remote from an Apple telephone or Pad. The problem for me is that  itunes is so dog slow and my PC so noisy that I would pay extra for a neater, quieter solution.

If a Windows user like me has ithings in the house can you imagine how buried in the buggers someone who owns an apple computer probably is?

It's why N-stream was invented, i.e. for remote control of the Naim, with me it's using an iPod.

Adam,

I am not in a position to implement computer based replay of any great quality, though I have ordered a very cheap wireless USB DAC that is certainly not of audiophile quality but will at least allow me to dip my toes in the water and see what all the fuss is about. My long term aim is to move away from CD to hard-disc replay, so I am interested in what sort of solutions others are implementing. No harm in keeping abreast of developments even if I can't yet properly join in.

Yes most (all?) computer users will have an internet connection and LAN. The point is that I got the impression that Richard was using iTunes from the Mac straight into the UQ without involving the LAN for the sake of simplicity. idevices may be all the rage, but they are bloody expensive remote controls. Also I don't want people emailing me or ringing me up on my remote control - seems rather bizzare to me but perhaps I'm just stuck in the past. No doubt streamers of the distant future will also function to make an excellent martini or whisky mac!
