Unitiserve Downloads Folder
Posted by: jamesw on 08 December 2012
Hi, I'm having a 'can it possibly be this simple?' moment and wanted to check I'm about to do either the right thing, or something which is going to screw everything up
Just purchased my first hi-res files and want to put them on my 2TB unitiserve. I quickly had a look on the network on my Macbook Pro and sure enough I can see the 'serve and the music and downloads folders. Can I literally just drag across the hires music folders to the 'music' folder on the 'serve? Is that all I need to do?
Sorry to ask but I couldn't see any documentation on this and a search didn't throw up much...
Cheers,
James
Around the forum there is apparently a downloads folder you can put them in?
Sadly I do not own a serve, so cannot help beyond that, but in essence yes it should be that simple.
there are two folder on a unitiserve- one called "Music"- this one is not for you!
The other one called "Downloads"- this is the right one!
You can drop your files there....my tip: use a proper tagging! the Unitiserve doesn't support folder view!
cheers
Ralf
James -- I recommend for starters making a folder on your computer that has the name of the artist and album, say, "Janis Joplin - Pearl" Within that folder, have each .flac or .wav file, and a file for the cover art named "folder.jpg"
On your computer, before you drag it to that Downloads folder, use a tagging program to make sure that the tags are right (assuming you are using the flac format). I use a program called Tag on my mac; it's free. Then, once you're sure the tagging is right, yes, just drag that entire folder into the Downloads folder!
Then, if you want your music to show up right away in nServe or nStream, refresh the Downloads share on the nServe.
Next, enjoy the music
The moving of the files into the Downloads folder on the uServe really is nothing more than drag 'n drop. As soon as the uServe sees the new files, you're all set. That's why a manual refresh can be helpful.

Guys, a couple of things if I may, while we're on the subject-
- can I, in a similar way to above, simply drag the 'music' folder to copy it to my NAS for backup, or to my Mac for conversion to iTunes so I can listen on my iPhone, etc?
- I have no trouble at all accessing the 'serve in the above way, or with the iPhone/iPad apps, but I can't access it at all with the web browser interface, as in the manual, no matter what variation, or browser I try. Any tricks here?
Cheers.
is it possible to update shares from n-serve? I would really like an laternative to the way we update shares in dtc, since it is keyboard unfriendly to say the least.
Claus
Claus, can you explain further what it is you want to do?
James, (1) yes just drag / copy or highlight and copy files from the Downloads folder to your nas.
(2) To get to my uServe in a Flash-supported browser window (you can't do it with an iPhone or iPad browser, as uServe uses Flash), I just type in "http://nssrvdf94/" into my browser address bar. You can find the similar identifier for your unit in nStream. That works, or just type in the ip address if you know it.
Claus -- I don't think that you can 'force' a share update from the iPhone apps; only the browser for me, as I'm on a mac at home so still no DTC!
Cheers!

Thanks Bart, (1) works like a charm- loving this! (2) unfortunately that's exactly what doesn't work for me, in normal browsers, not on the iPhone/iPad (I just meant no probs connecting with nServe/nStream. Any ideas to get this working on ordinary browsers? Wish Naim would release a Mac version of the control application...

Um, quick question-
I have this all up and running and under control now, BUT there's something I haven't run into before because I'm now using my first downloaded hi-res files, which are Flac - I've always left the unitiserve's settings on 'native' for my userve ripped-to-wav cd collection, but want to set to 'convert to wav' for the hi-res flacs, but do I need to do this every time I select a Flac album? Is there a setting on this or the NDX I can set to 'convert only when not wav' or something like that??
Cheers.
James I have an NDS (and a UnitiServe), not an NDX. but suspect that the answer is the same -- that (possible) conversion is controlled by the server, not the player. It's all, or nothing.
I'm still stuck on "native" on my uServe; keep forgetting to do the experiment and try letting it transcode.
You have an NDS? Wow, that's gotta sound good! What do you find about it over the NDX, just smoother?

James, my guess is that the uServe doesn't do anything with wav's if it's set to transcode to wav. Just a guess but I have no idea why it would do anything!
My system with the NDS in place sounds really great to me. I am thoroughly happy with it! I traded in my Naim DAC and XPS-2 towards the NDS and 555PS; I've not listened to an NDX. I just figured out that 'source first' really works for me and bought the NDS on faith that I'd love it, and I do. Both my wife and I noticed a huge difference immediately versus my old system, which was the uServe connected directly to the Naim DAC. I kept the uServe and still use it as a ripper and upnp server.
My former system was very very good; the current set-up is noticeably better however. I am happy despite what I paid to upgrade.

Bart,
Thanks, I've set it to 'transcode to wav' and can't hear much, if any difference on wav files than when it was set to 'native', but a little difference on flac files which makes it worthwhile when listening to hi-res flacs!
I've heard the NDS is simply stunning, so I'm sure you're in musical heaven with it! You're still using the Unitiserve as a server? I'm using mine into the NDX, but haven't experimented with using a NAS as a UPnP server, curious to see if there's a SQ difference, but haven't had the time to experiment yet!
James
James I strongly suspect that all uPnP servers sound the same. I bought the uServe to use as a player when I first put my system together, but upgraded to an NDS, relegating the uServe to ripper/storage/server status only. Totally happy with the way it all integrates.
I have just tried my first download from Naim using the Naim download manager. The download put the album into iTunes on my Mac which I then copied to the downloads folder on my Unitiserve. Although I can see all tracks on the album in the downloads folder when I go to my Unitiserve I can find only the first 4 tracks from the album. Not sure why it is not showing/playing the other tracks on the album. Can anybody help?
Barry,
Remove alll :,-,',! ", etc. in the taggings and the title names.

Non-alphanumeric characters can stop the indexing process dead in its tracks.
I had a lot of live Grateful Dead downloads, where use of the > sign is standard to denote that the song merges seamlessly into the next song. But the > sign in a tag will cause this very behavior -- any song after it will not be indexed.
And if there is such a character in the title of the folder itself (or an invisible character, seen only as a space), it can prevent the entire folder from being indexed.
Cheers!
Hi
Should I really have to remove all these characters of all the files and all the album titles?
Bart...I have your old system, Unitiserve & nDAC. I use it with the Supernait, as the nDAC against the DAC in the Supernait is far better. I thought it would blow me away, but sadly it didn't.
Friends are now saying, that perhaps the nDAC is too good for the rest of my system.

Naim should be aware of characters that can cause such problems, so I would send a mail to the Naim label address and ask if they can reproduce the problem. It may be a support question but they will sort it out I am sure. Strange things happens with meta data from time to time, bun until now I have not had problems with Naim albums.

Do you have to create this downloading folder on US-SSD to?
Love the sound of my system, hate the computer stuff...;-)
Jonas,
Afaik it is not possible to create a download folder on SSD model, you need the HDD mosel for that.
But if US should use your NAS, you need proper tagging for your music files as well.
That' s the reason why I love browsing by folder instead of browsing ba tagging :-)
