Playback uPnP Issues

Posted by: Wazza69 on 08 December 2012

Hi,

My Dad bought a UnitiQute on my recommendation in New Zealand (I am in the UK) but has been having some issues with Playback upnp which I am having difficulties diagnosing from over here so wondering if anyone has had similar problems and found resolutions:

1) When you search by Genre it finds the songs but they are not in albums and you just end up with an alphabetical list of songs in the particular Genre you searched on

2) It also pulls up all of the Audio books in the iTunes library which can be confusing when you are searching through the library

3) The Naim won't wake the MiniMac up from sleep mode, if you are playing an album and the Naim has cached some songs the MiniMac would go into sleep mode and then it won't wake up again, or if you stop playing music, then come back later and go to choose another song it can't find the UPnP Server (wake on LAN is selected in system prefs)

Any help would be really appreciated by both of us! He is a big Mac user so Playback is a good option generally. He is using a wired network to a MacMini (Snow Lion) and linking to his iTunes library in AIFF

Thanks

Listening to an opera or other multi-movement classical works out of order is unacceptable, of course.

Are you saying then when you go in through the sequence

"<Townky>"

"Music"

"Artist/Album" << This is the important bit

you see a list of Artists - choose Mozart for example

You should then see a list:

Cosi Fan Tutte

Violin Concerto No.1 in B flat, K.207

you choose the opera - you don't see the Overture as the first entry in the list?

I use Asset on my NAS. It is excellent. Made the NAS from an HP ProLiant MicroServer (£140!) with WHS 2011 installed (I use the WHS 2011 edition of Asset, which is free, though I bought a licence to show my support). Has served me without incident for over a year, and it's headless and very very low maintenance. I wholeheartedly recommend the MicroServer, WHS 2011 and Asset - none of which have ever let me down or required my attention. I don't think there's a better UPnP Server than Asset. I've tried, and ditched, ReadyDLNA and Twonky (before I took my ReadyNAS out of service) and then VortexBox (which I ran for 9 months on the MicroServer before the WHS 2011 edition of Asset came out). My SuperUniti and NaimUniti couldn't be happier! Asset handles Wav files (and I've never had an issue with their tags), transcoding, and provides a configurable browse tree so you can avoid organisation issues (unless, of course, you've made a mistake in tagging your files).

My expieriences are similar to McGhie, although I have been running Asset on WHS v1 for 2.5 years now on a tiny headless Assus micro server. The server has not crashed once in that time and it's on continuously. Asset streams for all the devices in my household including Naim, Windows, Android, iOS and Pure.

Hi RT,

Do you have the "UPnP Compatibility" option in the settings menu for your n-Stream app? If you do, can you enable it and tell me whether that fixes this specific issue for you?

Cheers

I am using the folder view, but correct otherwise. Overture is well down the list where "O" titles things start.

If I use Artist/Album it is in the right order. But I can't use it that way, because tagging for classical is so screwed up. There are three or four different versions of the composer Handel for Artist. This makes it too hard for me to find what I want to play, or even to browse for all the albums I have by a single composer.

That makes no difference.

It works just fine for my Squeezebox Touch and LMS running on the QNAP. Both Twonly and LMS are pointed to the same set of audio files.

I am trying to get the UPnP working with LMS

Posted on: 04 April 2013 by Ian P

RT, I feel your pain - LMS should be the answer though...

Here are the salient points from that other thread (thanks to PinkHamster):

**** The best place to get it is to log into your QNAP's admin section. There is QPKG menue from which you can access the QPKG downloads. Before you install it, please make sure that the current firmware of your QNAP is campatible with the QPKP. If in question, run an update of the firmware.

Ian, you might have to enable the UPnP function. I am not sure if this is set to 'on' in the standard config.

****

First go to the Advanced Setting of LMS. This should be on port :9001. There have look at the 'Plugins' tab. Make sure that the 'UPnP/DLNA Media Interface' box is checked. Save the settings.

Then go to port :9099 and check if the UPnP is enabled. This is on the SETTING page. If it is not, go to the STATUS page. Click on STOP. This will stop the server software. Then go back to SETTINGS and toggle UPnP 'on'. Back agein to STATUS and click START.

DO NOT play around with the UPnP toggle while the server is running!!!!! It will cause a crash and freeze the server and you will have to reinstall.

Sounds awful, but is really just a piece of cake. You should be done in two minutes! ****

Thanks. I just shut down Twonky (what an utter POS). It's not the first time it failed to function.

I now have LMS working, based on the tips from the NDX thread (and which you just repeated here). I'll see how LMS works for me, but browsing by folder to that Handel opera (it's Orlando, BTW...my favorite), it shows up in proper order.

I turned transcoding off for SSOTS. Looks like it does that correctly, serving 24/192 files to the ND5.

Great, I hope it allows you to enjoy the ND5XS at last. Let us know how you get on.

I love his Messiah - will look out Orlando - which recording?

The ND5XS could still go on the market for analog upgrades. However, I just found out I don't have a tax bill for this year, so maybe I can swing both. I am giving this weekend for getting everything sorted out with streaming. If I still have issues, I'll give up and go with my earlier plan to use my SBT and Arcam DAC instead.

Handle's Orlando. Fantatstic opera! I have Hogwood, Academy of Ancient Music. It is just fantastic. It's on CD on Amazon.

I just ordered a second version on CD with William Christe and Les Arts Florissants on Erato.

I attended a production of this opera in 1983 when Nicolaus McGegan was Artist-in-Residence at Washington University in St. Louis, and he put it on with Tafelmusik of Toronto and the Drama Dept of the university. They did it in authentic style with staging, costumes, period instruments (the two theorbos looked fantastic in the orchestra pit) and even the lighting was done to emulate candles.

I still need something good for editing tags for audio files on the NAS. I need to have something that supports regular expressions (regex) for batch changes to track names (I can do that in iTunes for AIFF files).

Any recommendations for OS X.

Hogwood - excellent, I'm a fan of his work - love his Beethoven 9 even though it finds little love from most - will get that Orlando.

I'm PC for ripping - but I understand XLD for you would be the way to go - but let a mac-head confirm

not ripping. I already use XLD.

I was asking about a tag editor. I want to be able to open albums I already have on the NAS and edit tags. I have the directory of my digital library already mounted on my Mac. Now I just need a good tag editor.

I'm using mp3tag to edit tags. Works perfect and it's free.

Sorry to hear about your adventures with streaming on a Mac when using Naim streamers.

I am a long time dedicated Naim user (552/500) however when it came to streaming I looked at other solutions due to the various problems you have encountered above.  Do not get disheartened as there are other solutions which will simply work in a Mac environment.  I would like to outline my system below - it has been in use since February of 2012 and has performed flawlessly in an all Mac environment.  While the steamer is Linn's top of the line Klimax DS all other Linn models will work exactly as described below.

I have a dedicated listening room upstairs and the Klimax DS is connected to the network via ethernet (same network as the wireless one into the same switch).  Linn prefers a separate network however things will even work on the single existing network.

I have an iMac downstairs with a 4Tb external hard drive connected to it.  There is no need for a NAS and all of the associated pain - specifically another operating system running on the NAS.

The robustness and stability of the system can be demonstrated when I explain how I do things.

I can actually sit upstairs in my listening room and rip cd's on a MacBook Pro which connects to the network wirelessly through Airport.  Once the files are ripped they are wirelessly sent downstairs to the iMac for storage on the external hard drive.  The iMac runs MinimServer - a UpnP program written last year by a fellow Linn forum member.  It is stable, robust, and easy to use.  A native version exists for the Mac.  Once the files are transferred wirelessly downstairs, taking only a matter of seconds, I then click a button on my MacBook Pro which signals MinimServer to rescan the network to find the new files.  This also takes simply a few seconds.

When I open Kinsky, Linn's control point software (also native Mac, and any iDevice) the new files are IMMEDIATELY found and sound instantly comes out of the speakers.

To summarize - I can sit in my listening chair upstairs, rip a cd on my laptop, wirelessly send the files downstairs to the hard drive, and have music playing back on the system in a matter of a few minutes.

IT SIMPLY WORKS

end of story.

Best

Gregg

PS  with reference to my other thread inquiring about the UnitQute and Airplay - all the Linn streamers work with AirPlay and my wife and kids have no problem playing music from their iPhones, iPods or iPads on the system via Spotify, Mog, Pandora etc.

For tagging I run MP3Tag on my Mac.  Although I own VMWareFusion for running Windows I have found that MP3Tag is EASILY run on a Mac using Crossover (google it).  It is an inexpensive emulation program which runs Windows programs on a Mac without the need for Parallels, VMWareFusion, or even a copy of Windows.

The MP3Tag icon sits in my dock.  When I click it the program launches in a few seconds and is fully functional and easy to use.  It is the best tagging program for either operating system and works perfectly well with the Mac.

For ripping I use DBPoweramp.  I do not think the user interface for XLD is Mac like or user friendly.  In this case I do need to use VMWareFusion (or Parallels) running a version of Windows.  Do not like it however I want to use DBPoweramp so that is what is necessary to get the job done.

Thanks glevethan...

Yeah, the whole Naim streaming thing with Mac OS X has been pretty painful. I hope I am coming to the end of that. Had I known in advance I would not have gone down this road.

I asked my dealer last year about the Linn streamer, but they had stopped carrying Linn due to reliability issues. I believe they were getting too many warranty repair requests from customers.

My experience with the Squeezebox Touch, LMS, and a $500 Arcam DAC has been the exact opposite. No more than 30 minutes setup, getting the audio files indexed and installing the iOS Squeezebox app, and bingo...it just works. It never crashes either (The ND5 does on occasion and has to be power cycled).

Could it be that your dealer is bad mouthing Linn since he no longer carries the line?

I have been a member of this forum since 2004.  I have a large number of friends from the forum who have moved onto Linn streamers.  I have yet to hear of anyone having reliability problems.  Everyones Linn streamer simply works.

As per my other thread I will be building a second system downstairs in the kitchen.  I have been investigating the UnitiQute as well as Linn's offerings (Sneaky and Majik).  I am hesitant to go down the Qute route as Airplay is important to me, easy firmware updates are also important (as per GuidoFawkes) and I do not want to futz around with ancient RS232 cables and Windows OS to do something basic as a firmware upgrade (which I can do wirelessly on my Linn via the internet in a matter of seconds).  I also want reliable and timely updates to both firmware and control point software.  Perhaps the new V1 and NAP100 are an option as they use simple asynch USB however I do not want a computer permanently attached to these boxes.  That means a computer on the desk - the V1/NAP100  on the desk - and wires on the desk going to speakers (on the desk?).  Too messy for a kitchen system.

Hi Racetripper. I started using Metadatics from the Ap Store for Mac which has eased my Twonky Server pain . Everything now has a Album Art and is correctly displayed and sorted in N-Stream. Very useful to see and edit the data on a granular level. It is a bit of a memory hog if you try to do your whole library all in one go though! My music is stored on a Qnap TS-269L in Raid 0. Cheers.

I have a 20 year relationship with this dealer and trust them. If they don't want to sell me a Linn streamer, I believe them when they say they have had issues. I am in the US, so it might also be a matter of inadequate and timely customer support from the distributor. I don't know.

It's moot anyway, even if I were to sell the Naim, I wouldn't turn around and spend that kind of money again when I know a SBT and Arcam works well enough for me (I play vinyl 90%+ of the time).

That might be what I am looking for. I'm taking a chance on the $9 for it. Thanks.

There is a lot to be said to plug in a Macbook Pro and away you go - What I like about Naim / Linn streamers is you can stream or play via USB/Optical. At present I have a MBP playing Spotify through an Optichord into my Uniti - using an Ipad to control Spotify. It is only UPnP where Naim streamers struggle to work with the dreadful array of Mac compatible UPnP servers that are currently available to use.

MinimServer resolves this issue but if you must stck with Macs - plug them in.

Naim streamers are very versatile.
