SQ difference - US and NS01?

Posted by: AlexWard on 11 December 2012

Hello,

My friendly dealer has offered me a free upgrade to a x2tb NS01 to replace my US which suffers from a few niggles every now and then.

Does anyone know if there is a difference in sound quality between the two devices?

Pro's for me seem to be:

- NS01 is supposedly rock solid and robust

- would give me upgrade to 2tb storage and 2tb backup

Cons for me seem to be:

- full width hardware required another shelf of Fraim

- aesthetically my bottom Fraim shelf will now have lonely HiCap and not look as good

- NS01 possibly harder to re-sell at later date (I was originally interested in NS01 but dealer pointed me towards US at the time of purchase)

Any help appreciated.

What is the rest of your system?

You avoid the switchmode psu also. I suppose that no matter wich server or streamer we buy the second hand value will not be impressive like with other computer gear.

The disks inside the ns01 is very quiet on my Fraim, but I have never seen or heard how a unity disk sounds.

Alex do you use the uServe as a true server, or as a player directly into a dac?  That may influence the answer.

Yes I use it as a Server primarily serving Qutes in my house.

Rest of system is NDX, NDAC,55PS, Snait, HiCap 2

Judged by posts on the forum UServe seems to run into more problems than the other servers.  Of course we do not know how many Userves vs NsXX serves are sold, so the observation may be totally wrong.

As "only" a server, I would doubt that the sound qualities would be different.  I am not sure that anyone has shown sound quality differences among properly-functioning upnp servers.

Any doubts raised here on the forum about the sound qualities of the uServe have been when it's used as a player; at least that's all I recall over the past 18 months or so.
