Synology DS412+ Set Up
Posted by: dkrause on 12 December 2012
Trying to set up a Synology DS412+ with my ND5 XS. Did the install last night - all seemed to go well. I think I assigned a Static IP to the DS 412+...I currently just have the three default shared folders for Music, Photos and Video. I dropped some music folders into the Shared Music folder on the 412+ and I can see them on my nStream app. However, none of them will play. I assume I still have a few more settings that need ot be addressed...just not sure what they are. Also, I am having a weird problem where the front panel of my ND5 XS does not show the DiskStation 412+ but my nStream app does...This seems to happen after the ND5 has been asleep for a while...I welcome any thoughts on that as well.
Hmm, not sure, although from your other post -- I am pretty sure that you cannot run both the Audio Station and music server at the same time. Shut down audio station and run just the music server.
If you click "play" in nStream -- nothing happens?
What format are your music files?
The files are a mixture of WAV and FLAC files...these are files I have played on the Naim via another NAS so I know most/all of them are playable on the ND5...
dk
How did you setup the shared folders. Synology comes with an internal app called "Media Server" which will setup these folders automatically.
If you have, then maybe your IP settings are not correct. I had an ND5 connected to a Synology 212j without issue, but the only thing the NAS was doing was providing music to the ND5. I left the ND5 on DHCP rather than setting a static IP on it. It just seemed to work better that way.
Hope you get it sorted soon.
I am using the Media Server app on the Synology. I just dropped the music into the generic "MUSIC" folder it created...you did mention one thing that peaked my interest. I "think" I assigned a static IP address to the Synology 412+ because many posters implied that was a more "stable" approach. I DID NOT however, turn off anything in the ND5 settings in regard to DHCP...ws I supposed to do something on that front? Could I have a conflict there?
have a look at the nStream setting, the little cog wheel at the bottom, at the top it should tell you the ip address of the ND5. Is it in the same range as the NAS. What subnet and gateway have you given the NAS
yes...the IP address of my ND5 is XXX.XXX.001.097...the DS412+ is XXX.XXX.1.254 and the "XXX.XXX" is the same in both...
Are these the only two units on your network, by which i mean are they connected back to back or via a switch with no other devices connected.
The reason i ask is that a lot of routers would be .254 so if there is a broadband router on the network it may already have this address. Before you assigned the ip address to the NAS did you check it was available.
Sorry if im telling you how to suck eggs
yes...the IP address of my ND5 is XXX.XXX.001.097...the DS412+ is XXX.XXX.1.254 and the "XXX.XXX" is the same in both...
What is your subnet mask is it 255.255.255.0 on both for example ... it must be the same.
Have you tried playing music without nStream ... can your ND5 see your NAS?
SubNet Mask is the same...and no, even though the Synology shows up in the nStream app as an option, it DOES NOT show up as a UPnP option on my ND5 front panel...
is the ND5 set to DHCP
I wonder if I messed something up trying to set up the manual IP address in the Synology settings...I can't figure out why the nStream app can see my Synology but the ND5 cannot...also, I temporarily enabled the DS Audio app (from Synology) and was able to play these same files on my iPhone 5...it is making me insane...
right now the ND5 is set to "Yes" for DHCP...
on the Synology under Control Panel > Network > Network Interface it shows LAN 1 disabled and LAN 2 enabled...under LAN 2 it shows where I DID NOT use DHCP but instead configured the address manually...I think I might have messed that up because it shows the right SubNet Mask but XXX.XXX.1.94 as the IP address...as I wrote above, I found XXX.XXX.1.254 elsewhere in the Synology info...
does seem odd. I personally would change the IP of the NAS. to another free address other than .001,.254, or .255 obviously it needs to be a free address and confirm the gateway and subnet are correct.
Can you get iRadio
Under Control Panel > Network > "General" tab it shows a default gateway of XXX.XXX.1.254...I have the "Manually Configure DNS Serve" checked and the address listed is the same XXX.XXX.1.254...on the next tab however, for LAN 2, I have the IP address as XXX.XXX.1.94...I am thinking something is wrong there but not sure which one to change
yes...iRadio has worked all along
in case I fail to mention it later...thanks by the way for taking the time to give me your thoughts on this...
Do you have a PC on the network, can you connect to the NAS
To be honest dk ive reached my limit. I dont want to lead you up a garden path. If iradio works and you can connect to the NAS from your PC id expect all the IP settings to be fine.
Could be a firewall setting on the NAS, but i think you need help from someone more experienced than myself.
Im sure one will be along shortly. Good luck
I think this is where you are going wrong, I would not try and manually configure any network settings in the Synology. Can you not just set your router to reserve a specific ip address for the Synology within the router set up?
Just to let you know, my settings are
ip 192.168.1.xxx
sub 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.254
DNS 192.168.1.254
So yours seem fine
I had similar problem with synology DS412+ and was really frustrated as synology DS211j earlier used by me worked flawlessly. My problem completely solved as detailed below:-
Go to media server by clicking top left menu (4 squares)-then DMA compatibility-device list
check up that NDS is listed there and enable is checked. If listed but not enabled, get it enabled. If not listed, go to media server-network interface-change Lan1 to Lan2 / Lan2 to Lan1. APPLY and again go to DMA compatibility-device list. Now NDS must be in list, if not enabled enable and save it by top middle button option.
If above doesn't work, Go to pacakge center and stop all servers except media server and repeat steps as mentioned above.
I am sure that your problem will be solved as mine.
