Hotels...the good and the bad

Posted by: mista h on 13 December 2012

Just finished watching the Claridges documentary on TV.

Whats the best & worst hotel you have stayed at?

For me one of the best that stands out was the Hotel President in Berlin. They did everything right without being poncy. Our room had a huge walk-in Power shower, best i have ever used.

The worst was probably the Beach hotel,Ramsey,I O M.  A total sh1t hole but we always stayed their for the TT every year. 2 things i remember about the place were a guy who went their as a general dogsbody, the day before the TT was due to start half the staff walked out and he got promotion to Head Waiter. We noticed the head barman had rather greasy hands, next day when we went to get petrol he served us.

In 2005 took SWMBO to newYork for the shopping trip. Stayed at the Waldorf Estoria, absolutely loved it. The whole experience was immense.

Worst is hard to say as been in quite a few sh#t holes

Best by a country mile was the Taj in Bombay. We stayed in the original part several times. Stunning rooms, out of this world service and dinning rooms that make Michellin look irrelevent.

i really can't think of the name of the worst but it was in Athens, near Sintagma Square. Squalid beyond belief. Stayed only one night and re-located to St Georges Lycabetus. Decent rather than good, but head and shoulders above Sintagma Square (literally, if you know Athens)

Most of the hotels in the Gulf (UAE/Oman etc) were excellent, but for some reason I kinda liked the Al Fallage in Muscat, even though the others were "better"

Cheers

Ahh! The Al Falage! (Think that's the correct spelling). My home from home in Oman. It had a huge menu and a nice friendly feel to it. I stayed in the Intercontinental a couple of times which although more luxurious just didn't have the same allure.

The worst?  A "Hotel" in Sellyoak, Birmingham. The lady who owned it had dirty fingernails and cooked the food in the restaurant. I was so awful I cannot bring myself to describe it in any detail.

Correct spelling for sure. Thanks for refreshing the old grey cells.

The last time I was there was probably c.1988. We used to mainly stay at MAM but occasionally got put up in the Al Falage or at Quran Heights.

Cheers
