Superuniti and Nas not syncing

Posted by: Percybass on 16 December 2012

Apologies to those who've helped me out thus far with newbie Nas and Superuniti set-up problems, but I'm still having real trouble and would appreciate some advice on the following issue(s). After various trials and errors with ripping my situation is: -

1)  I put four albums onto my NAS (Readynas Duo) in different formats to try them out. I tried putting them in separate folders but the SU couldn't find them. When I got rid of the folders and merged everything together the SU picked them up, but I don't want to have such disorganised mayhem in my music folder when 1,000 or so CD's are ripped. Are folders possible?

2)  A high-res FLAC file (downloaded from Linn using Linn's download manager) had silent spells every minute or so. Also, an Apple Lossless file ripped from ITunes made a horrible crunching noise and skipped to the next track (although the CD looked clean).

3)  I deleted everything to start again and my NAS disc displayed itself as empty. I then ripped another (5th) album in Apple Lossless straight to the NAS and it shows up fine, but......

4)  The SU is still showing the original four deleted albums, but obviously says "Can't Play", because they no longer exist. Worse - it s not picking up the new (5th) album, which definitely is on the NAS.

5)  I've emptied the trash folder on my MacBook in case some trace of the old albums was hanging around in there; but still the same.

Sorry for the lengthy description, but does this problem sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks in advance.

After adding, removing or changing files you need to let your server software rescan the library. This seem to be your current major problem.

Thanks PinkHamster

I've just re-scanned using RAIDar, but still the same problem I'm afraid. Deleted albums showing up on Superuniti and no sign the album that's sitting in the NAS.

What does Raidar have to do with this?

You need to let your Music Server Software do a rescan. Which server are you using? Asset, Twonky?

Sorry, PinkHamster, I don't understand. I've got a superuniti. It's supposed to scan automatically for servers (and it's picking up the nas, just the old albums).

I don't recall having ever done a scan before apart from using raidar, and i'm afraid don't recognise the names you mention (are these other program's I need to run (from my MacBook?)

Percybass,

You need to double check a few things. I don't know much about the ReadyNAS Duo, but found a manual on-line.  There is a section called "Networked DVD Players and UPnP AV Media Adapters", which shows the very basic uPnP setup screen. All it allows you to do is enable or disable the service, specify a media folder and Rescan media files. This is on the web admin screens.

Make sure it's enabled, the folder specified is the one where your ripped music is stored, then click the rescan media button.

Subfolders should be fine so you can organise the music into artist / album, but every time you add / change / delete music files you must press the Rescan media button.

The Superuniti will only know about new music after the uPnP server has finished rescanning.

Hope that helps - if not post again...

Thanks Dave. I'll try this out tonight.

The thing to remember is that the Superuniti cannot see the NAS folders directly, it can only see what the uPnP server presents. The uPnP server can see all the folders on the NAS and can scan these to find music files. It uses the metadata tags in the music files to build an enhanced directory that nStream or the player directly can search.

Some uPnP servers can detect that something has changed in the folder and scan automatically, but others need you to start the scan manually after ripping new files.

Hopefully you will soon be enjoying your music collection through the Superuniti - it's not that difficult once you get your head around the basic principles, but it can be daunting at first.

Did you buy the Superuniti through a Naim dealer? If so, then they really should have spent some time making sure all this was set up properly and you understood how to operate it.

Happy to help.

Thanks Dave, but no joy yet I'm afraid.

I'm trying to follow the steps in my Readynas manual, but not getting the options I'm supposed to see. I've checked (I'm sure) that the right permissions are on etc, but when I try to connect through Finder (as the manual says) all the shares are greyed out and I'm not getting the log on screen I'm supposed to see.

I did buy through a Naim dealer and they've offered to come out at the weekend to see what can be done. Here's hoping.

In general, the process described seems very lengthy and 'techy' (which I'm definitely not!). Is it normal to have to do this for every album copied to a NAS? (Naively I thought it would be as easy - or easier - than playing a CD. Ah well.)

Once again though, thanks for your help. Hopefully I'll have a 'ripping' Christmas!

Hi Percy,

very good news sole te hnician is passing by to sort out. The advizes above from Dave are spot in, and once running, the ripping and rescan is really not difficult and will take a little of your time. Very interested to know what exact rpping software is on your ReadyNas. Have you seen somewhere things like Twonky or Assett ?

The new readynas v2 has its own upnp server, absolutely no ripping on any Readynas units.

Sorry to hear you are still having problems. It's hard to help remotely as there are so many variables, so I hope your dealer can help you out. If not, post again and the collective brain power around here will do it's best...

Where are you by the way? You may have a forum member close by who's prepared to help.

All seems to be sorted now! Dealer came out on Saturday for a look and decided the best solution was to re index (?) the nas' discs and go back to factory settings. There were also some adjustments needed to default settings on the nas, but I didn't really follow this. it took all day for the re-boot, but the main thing is that it seems to be working ok.

Thanks everyone for your help.
