Searching using nServe

Posted by: PeterX on 17 December 2012

I would very much like to be able to search for composers using their surnames.  Currently searching requires knowledge of their christian names, which I don't always know.

Is there any way of editing 'composers' using the nServe app for an HDX to do this? Failing that is there any other way to do it. I have an iMac so no desk top client as yet!

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter,

Composer name cannot be edited ; we can only hope that future versions of n-Serve or DTC will allow this. The workaround is to edit the album titles, preceding the title by composer's last name. Many album titles are already classified this way by the AMG database that the n-Serve app looks at when you rip a CD.

You can edit from the n-Serve app.

Peter, I have a HDX but not ome cross your issue yet.

I agree ith Jan tht ou cann eDIY the composer details but just wondered whether you can use a $ sign as a wild card as in computer searches. May be worth asking Naim on this?

Cbr600, while trying your wildcard idea on the n-Serve app, I've just discovered that the search function looks in the full text string, so it will find composers just by typing in their full last name (or close to full). Whether this a new feature or simply something I haven't tried before, IT WORKS !!!

For example, typing 'Sae' into the search box returns 'Camille Saint-Saƫns' ; 'Tart' gives 'Giuseppe Tartini' and so on.

Gratefully yours,

Jan

(the wild card doesn't work BTW)

As an addendum to my post above, on the n-Serve app, click on 'Composers' ; the search box appears at the top of the page. Type in the surname.

Seems to work as stated

Jan - I was afraid that would be so. Editing titles would be a work around only and not work for albums with more than one composer.

It is interesting that modern day composers are often referred to by their Christian and surname (eg John Rutter, Eric Whitaker, Vaughan Williams etc whilst the older generations only by their surname.

Ah well will hope the upcoming DTC for mac will have full editing ability - NAIM please note!

Peter,

Am I missing something here?

My search functionworks as Jan describes it, so you can enter a surname ( or part surname) and it finds the composer ok

Update on the search function:

If the search doesn't turn up the composer you're looking for (assuming you've ripped the album), the likely cause is the absence of the "Composer" field when the album was first ripped. In these cases, redo an online lookup, as the composer field may have been added since in the central database (usually All Music Guide).

Just discovered this when looking for Boccherini... who wouldn't show up, despite being visible in Album view. Redid the lookups and all is fine, well 8 out of 9 albums anyway. One on FreeDB refuses to update.
