Phishing Phonecalls?

Posted by: GraemeH on 21 December 2012

Two calls within the space of two hours (I have no account with the Bank/Builing Society calling) asking me to to confirm my name and asking as 'security' my date of birth.  When I asked what it was in connection with the caller said he couldn't say until I had given my date of birth 'as security'.....whenI said I was not prepared to give the information the second caller became argumentative and I politely hung-up.

Was I right to do this?

Absolutely right, if you have no account with them why would they have your DOB as a security check. I doubt if I would have been polite.

Had this 2 nights ago. I have a new response now(used to tell them to p155 off). Now i say to them you want to speak to Bill(or fred or Charlie) and tell the caller to hold on while i fetch him. Then i put the phone down on one side and its up to them how long they hold on for. When i pick the phone up 30 minutes later suprise, suprise their gone.

I would be as abrupt and dismissive as I possibly could be - don't have time for the BS, and it's pretty apparent that they are up to no good.  NOYFB would be one appropriate rejoinder.

Don't care who they are. I won't do business over the phone with anybody, kosher or not.

I normally ask for their name again, make them spell it out twice, then ask for the company name and again ask them to spell it out with their address. By now most have hung up.

If not, I mention that we have subscribed to the Telephone Preference Service. If they are UK based they either apologise or quickly hang up.

If they don't hang up, I assume they are foreign based scammers and simply say we don't deal with overseas companies by phone and hang up.

Cheers
