So sad. Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlett were a big part of my childhood.

Thunderbirds are classic but I remember liking also Space: 1999 in mid 70's. RIP Gerry.

Didn't talk much but he was my favourite character.

R.I.P. Gerry.

I enjoyed the series as a kid and then again with my son when it became popular again in the '90s. I made the Blue Peter Tracey Island but bought the official Tracey Island toy for my son.

I also remember Fireball XL5 and also enjoyed Stingray but Thunderbirds was always my favourite. I never got into Captain Scarlett as I was a bit older by then.

RIP Gerry.

Didn't Captain Black go on to play centre back for Liverpool (when they were good) and then became a pundit on MotD?

Yes! That was the coolest one. Under-utilized IMO.

Always loved Thunderbirds, but my favourite of his creations was one of his rare forays into live action - UFO. Set in 1980 (made in 1969/70), it assumed that by then there would be bases on the moon, men would wear jumpsuits, women purple wigs and submariners string vests. And life would be one long battle against alien invaders seeking to harvest humans' organs.

Like many of Gerry's series, it's seen (very unfairly) as rather campy these days but it was  a very dark series - and, like most of his shows, was very innovative and made a very real virtue of the necessity imposed by limited technology and budgets.

RIP one of the towering figures of British TV. Very sad news.

Sad news. He's entertained generations of kids from Twizzle, Torchy, (vaguely remember as a youngster) to Four Feather Falls, and then the amazing run of Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, and Thunderbirds, the most expensive UK TV series at that time. There was nothing else like it on TV at that time.

Captain Scarlet was also amazing and much more realistic but by that time I was growing up so sadly I left it all behind then. My young brother carried the baton and then, years later, it all came round again. My two sons were obsessed with Thunderbirds and Tracy Island in the early 90s.
He's left a wonderful legacy.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in that era maturing through captain scarlet  thunderbirds. But  my favourite was UFO. As a series right from the opening credits to the end .That end theme really freiked me.
UFO was so ahead of its time .Space 1999 was also fantastic both series character led without the aid of todays CG effects.

As an impressionable boy, growing up in the '60s wouldn't have been the same without Gerry Anderson. I used to rush round to a friend's house after school to watch Thunderbirds. Great show, with a top villain in 'The Hood',  Nosy Parker was always good for a laugh, and then there was Lady Penelope...

Saw 'Thunderbirds are go!' as soon as it came out, bought the books, even saw the stage show. Carefully taped each re-run episode for when my daughters were old enough to watch. Sadly, they preferred Stingray. Still got the jigsaws and the remains of Thunderbird 3 somewhere.

So RIP Gerry, and thanks for making childhood memories so fab.

Gerry Anderson''s work will certainly live on with me.. A creative eccentric that brought so much entertainment and inspiration to me... And as a 10 year old I gave up horse riding at the weekend so I could watch Thunderbirds.. Well you had to get your priorities right..  Watching it on TV whilst thumbing through my latest copy of TV Countdown comic was my idea of heaven.......  Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet (though always too short)  and UFO definitely my favourites. The Hood gave me nightmares for many years.. Hence the Avatar, luckily the nightmares have faded now

He was referred to as Nosey on several occasions, particularly when he across anybody from his past.

Very sad to hear this.  As many have said Gerry was a genius who created superbly imaginative and engaging TV for both children and adults.  Like David Patterson and Kevin W say above UFO and Space 1999 were my favourites too, indeed I would go so far as to say they both remain right at the very top of my list of all time favourite TV shows/movies.  UFO in particular succeeded in creating some excellent characters, genuinely moving and deep plots and has an effortless sixties cool that makes me long to furnish my house in orange and purple!!

Both Space and UFO are of reference quality on DVD and Blu-ray and far surpass the Star Wars Blu-ray box set I recently bought with its appalling CGI.  The model work and set design on Space is jaw dropping even now.

Gerry was a hero of mine and his programmes are almost unique in that I seem to be able to watch them over and over again and love them just as much each time.

RIP Gerry, may you forever live amongst the stars.
