The Forum Ranking System

Posted by: Don Atkinson on 31 December 2012

The Forum Ranking system is a mystery to us all, including Richard.

Hoopless acknowledged back in February 2011 that the point scoring system was a secret. But they failed to mention that the ranking (#1, #2, #3 etc) isn’t directly related to the community points (132,013;  110,945;  67,574 etc). There are plenty of anomalies.

I have plotted the Points (Y axis) against Rank (X axis) for the first 25 members (ok #22 is omitted for obvious reasons) and there are some significant anomalies.

BigH is #1, but there are a few people at #0 which I presume is a more elevated position in the system.

Kuma has the second largest number of Community Points but is Ranked #6

Richard has noticanly fewer points than Adam but is ranked #5 with Adam a miserable #11 (these rankings will no doubt change over time)

Richard (and Hoopless) considers the Ranking and points system to be “a bit of fun”

Is It ?

Or is it some sinister plot to oust Adam and Kuma ?

If I can figure out how to copy and paste my x/y graph here, I will

Cheers

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Kuma's problem is he has some very dodgy speakers and is high on the list for deportation to an obscure place north of Hadrian's Wall

Surprised you didn't upset Jim with that remark Mike.

I'm a lowly(?) 163 with 15,000 points.
I don't link to social feeds so maybe this has an impact?

James,

I don't link to social feeds either......I have no desire to do so.  My resolution was totally tongue in cheek as I'm sure you figured out anyway.

What is this "Kuma...... he" business?

This is no way to speak about the First Lady of Hifi!

Or is there something I don't know?

Perhaps this could explain a fall in favour.

According to the hoop

Your community rank reflects your overall contributions to, and influence within, the community. The lower the number, the better! The rank is based on your overall community activity points, as well as the number of followers that you have. You earn activity points when you participate on the site. For instance, all of the following earn activity points: posting content, commenting, liking content, following other members or content, and voting on polls. Other actions will also earn you points. In general, the more active you are, the more activity points you will earn.

Guido,

Ok, i've read the Hopeless statement once or twice. There are two fundamentals to the rankings; community points and followers.

Hopeless won't (or can't) say what the rationale is behind the accumulation of points or the relationship between followers and points and even Richard has said he has no details. I simply think Hopeless have lost the management file, including how to switch the rankings off.

Kuma's is a position that is a particularly strange position given the number of points he has and the fact that some of those around him have fewer points and zero followers. I only use this as an example, Kuma seems totally relaxed about his decline into immenent exile.

Of course its only a bit of fun, as is this thread. I'm not really paranoid.........

Yet !

Cheers

Can the points be traded in against equipment? If so I've got no chance

What a brilliant idea !!!

£10 worth for each 100 points would be nice.

You could cash them in for a set of genuine Naim fuses !

LOL

I like the idea of trading points for kit ....

Don

I didn't understand the hoopla definition either ... apparently I'm #3, but was hoping I was #6.

At least I now know who is #1.

Alternatively #86 is a good number, but then I'd be wondering who is #99?

Still I'd have toi be Smart to figure that out.

I suspect Hopeless has a highly scientific way of calculating these numbers and by cross referencing them with other factors can work things about us we don't even know ourselves.

All the best, Guy

I keep loosing ground in ranking, probably being punished for zero upgrading in my twelve years ownership of a modest NAIM system. What I need is a LoFi corner.

Don't let them bully you - your system is a really nice, well-matched set of kit.  In fact, you should post a pic on the system pics thread if you haven't already.

Don't be greedy Haim, No 28 out of several thousand is pretty impressive

I think my ranking would be higher if I wasn't as much of a prick.

In answer to both those elements ------ size isn't important

Its not what you've got , but what you do with it !!

Or so they say

Haim, I'm #27 and slowly dropping as well - and I don't have a single Naim component in my system... the fact that we're still relatively high must be due to the quality of the music!

Seems to me that it's at least as complex as Google's search engine ranking and they probably change the criteria as frequently. As with Google, it probably makes no sense at all once you are past the "Google local" results and the to 20 positions.

But it's not worth getting into  "FPO" (Forum Post Optimisation) unless they start letting us trade points for kit though.

Sorry to raise it again,  but I'm bored & waiting for some paint to dry & paint drying reminded me .........  about the hopeless community & activity points system

- after all this time I see its fixed - not

Just take the most active 12 members list   1st to 12th

Kuma            139,551

Lontano        122,294

BigH47          154,620

Richard Dane        75,474

MilesSmiles    91,916

Hook              66,583

Simon-i-S       53,094

bazz               57,227

Julian H          54,099

osprey           106,000

Polarbear       52,870

Christopher_M     82,712

Look around other examples & its all over the place

To quote the pop-up on this "In general, the more active you are, the more activity points you will earn"   Some haven't contributed for months,  some haven't even got Naim equipment

My point is either get it right or get shot of it

I wonder whether all posts are equal. For example, whether posting that one is listening to DSOTM for the umpteenth time in the music room is as valuable as reviewing an album or helping someone out. I see that you get more points for liking things, though I'm not sure if one of one's own posts is more valuable. Not that it matters of course.....
