The Forum Ranking System

Posted by: Don Atkinson on 31 December 2012

The Forum Ranking system is a mystery to us all, including Richard.

Hoopless acknowledged back in February 2011 that the point scoring system was a secret. But they failed to mention that the ranking (#1, #2, #3 etc) isn’t directly related to the community points (132,013;  110,945;  67,574 etc). There are plenty of anomalies.

I have plotted the Points (Y axis) against Rank (X axis) for the first 25 members (ok #22 is omitted for obvious reasons) and there are some significant anomalies.

BigH is #1, but there are a few people at #0 which I presume is a more elevated position in the system.

Kuma has the second largest number of Community Points but is Ranked #6

Richard has noticanly fewer points than Adam but is ranked #5 with Adam a miserable #11 (these rankings will no doubt change over time)

Richard (and Hoopless) considers the Ranking and points system to be “a bit of fun”

Is It ?

Or is it some sinister plot to oust Adam and Kuma ?

If I can figure out how to copy and paste my x/y graph here, I will

Cheers

Don

Nonsense. I'm carefully honing mine so that its long-term average is 33 1/3.

It certainly is bizarre Mike. I've just looked at my rating and I don't think it's changed even after a busy period of posting last weekend. It's pretty irrelevant anyway. I think that rep points alongside number of posts that they have on the Scottish forum is possibly more useful but even there can be friction between forum members with minus rep points being given. I guess we should be grateful that this forum is relatively polite.

Agreed,  but why bother with this kind of stuff,  we are not teenagers on the twittersphere collecting best friends kudos rankings.  We had the fiasco with the pink heart things & I think that message got thru as it seemed to have been dropped PDQ.

So what is it with activity points & community ranks???  My guess is its tied up with encouraging forumites to be busy posting - I strongly suspect hopeless get traffic related payments from Naim.

Obviously duration of membership doesn't count for anything. I've been a member of this forum since August 2000, yet I have a mere 4,121 activity points and a community rank of 790.

:-(

Mike,

I agree with you, its hopless. Even Richard claimed he has no idea whatsoever how this ranking system works. I have no Idea what its purpose is at all.

I have compiled a list of the top 30 or so ranked members. This illustrates the ludicrous nature of the ranking system.

Gale 401, (you remember ? just about as many aliases at Swarmi, George, wat and HH put together) moves up this year to rank 24. Hasn't posted for over a year. I can account for it, but I can't understand why Naim put up with this sort of drivel from Hopeless.

I get the distinct impression that Hopeless feel some of us are unwelcome. No doubt everybody who has posted to this thread has now been "Black-Balled" and as the OP, I guess my days are numbered.......

Cheers

Another anomily I noticed is Osprey.

60,000 points January 2013, 103,000 point January 2014 and now 106,000 points.

Very few other people accumulate points at that rate. Every couple of weeks he gets a "bonus" 1,000 points.

Paranoid ?, who said that ?

Cheers

If you remember the new forum feedback thread that accompanied the transition, BigH was one of the most vocal and blunt critics of Hoopsadaisy. Yet he remained consistently at number 1. There's your key...

He's been a good boy then, only bad boys get to number 1. Think Putin.

Yep, Osprey gets an average 300 points per post, you get 3 points.

But its the quality that counts Mike.

Your posts are interesting and engaging, and Hoopless therefor want to see more and more of them, so for you to move up the rankings we want to see 100 of your posts as opposed to 1 of Osprey's.....

........hope that mekes you feel better   at least until that bunch of Hoopless pratts stop frigging around with the only decent Forum on the Internet.

Well I just looked to see how many points I would get with one post and it was only 3 points. I must be really out of favour.

2 more than you deserve though

Perhaps you gain more for starting topics or being quoted - who knows  - who cares? (3 points )

Could be that Adam can call your posts total Char-bunk and score minus one per each.

PS: If this is the case I'd totally agree.

Posted 39 times from January 1-19.  Decided that was too much, so I took a break. Really don't want to be thought of as someone who posts carelessly or obsessively.

Don't care at all about the forum ranking system, but I do care about what others here think, and I do not want to wear out my welcome.

I think we need to find the member who holds rank #666...

Posted on: 08 February 2014 by hungryhalibut

I'm not sure I'd want that one. I was 252 for a while, which had a nice ring to it.

Posted on: 08 February 2014 by BigH47

Well I've been sulking ever since I lost my No 1 status.

One of the best things about re-registering has been to loose my former ranking!

I prefer being in the thousands rather than the units!
