The Forum Ranking System

Posted by: Don Atkinson on 31 December 2012

The Forum Ranking system is a mystery to us all, including Richard.

Hoopless acknowledged back in February 2011 that the point scoring system was a secret. But they failed to mention that the ranking (#1, #2, #3 etc) isn’t directly related to the community points (132,013;  110,945;  67,574 etc). There are plenty of anomalies.

I have plotted the Points (Y axis) against Rank (X axis) for the first 25 members (ok #22 is omitted for obvious reasons) and there are some significant anomalies.

BigH is #1, but there are a few people at #0 which I presume is a more elevated position in the system.

Kuma has the second largest number of Community Points but is Ranked #6

Richard has noticanly fewer points than Adam but is ranked #5 with Adam a miserable #11 (these rankings will no doubt change over time)

Richard (and Hoopless) considers the Ranking and points system to be “a bit of fun”

Is It ?

Or is it some sinister plot to oust Adam and Kuma ?

If I can figure out how to copy and paste my x/y graph here, I will

Cheers

Don

Looks like we’ve all been moved around the ranking places.

But still can’t understand the logic – top 3 are in the same order

Kuma with 139,566 points,  Lotano  122,294 & BigH on 154,672

Anyhow, as my paint is now dry, the new carpet is down & the dining room finished & I now need to press on with the next project before more boredom sets in.

Talking of which I made up a new short IC for the Nait 2 in the dining room: 30mm of my fav magic Mogami 2549 cable with Neutrik DIN’s.  I have also been seriously fed up with only able to use the first few notches on the Nait volume because of its 75mV sensitivity & took the opportunity to install a 15dB attenuation L-Pad in the wall socket - Welwyn RC55 resistors (of course) – now I can crank the volume up past 10 o’clock & get to hear the real Nait 2.

-  nuff to say "we" are very happy

All points are created equal, but some are more equal than others ... apparently!

Congratulations on your soldering skills ! Any particular reason for choosing Neutriks ?

It's clearly explained by Hoopla :

"The rank is based on your overall community activity points, as well as the number of followers that you have or the number of restraining orders you have obtained. You earn activity points when you participate on the site. For instance, all of the following earn activity points: posting content, commenting, licking content, following other members content or scent trails, and voting on polls. Other actions will also earn you points. In general, the more sexually active you are, the more activity points you will earn."

If you don't like your rank, change deodorant.

Better than Preh     for a number of reasons (only IMO of course)

Non-locking ring body

Chunky cast alloy body

Easier to work with

I've used them in all my Naim IC's,  I use the NYS322 series with silver pins.

The exception is on my SN to PSU cable assembly where I insisted on locking rings for security reasons.

I also use Nuetrik Profi RCA's on the pseudo balanced pair connecting my phono stage.

+1 for Neutriks.

I don't think it was "widespread". You got an unexpected "boost".......

Yes - the RCA's are the ones Kuma, the DIN looks like a Preh without a locking ring

But who made it (sorry if it was you - but !!! )

The cutting back of the cores to fit x2 cables into the DIN is something I see Chord do a lot these days - unacceptable

Then what is going on into the Profi's,  why cut back the cable outer when it easily fits & Nuetrik even supply 2 OD sizes - 3 to 7mm the large one goes 5 to 8mm

Enuff !!!!  Sorry I know I started it but this thread has drifted way off subject

We must get back to Forum Ranking System

It looks more like - cutting off the insulation and using heat shrink to allow a non-cramped entry of two cables to the DIN.

Possibly a better solution than your alternative.

As to the RCA phonos - it really rather depends on the tightness of the cable into the rear screw on part of the plug. A stiff mechanical connection here risks:

1: twisting the solder joints as the can is screwed back into place

2: creating a stiff vibrational path to the plug/socket interface.

... and - "Chunky cast alloy body" - not necessarily a good thing.

Naim's plastic XLR plugs look cheap but were manufactured in preference to using the available "chunky" models.

Why's that Mike ?

Adam, James - apart from durability - as in stage/recording use - a thick cable sleeve around tight twisted pairs does nothing much other than give a false impression of value in domestic hifi use.

Using such thick cables that are ideal for RCA use & trying to fit them into a DIN is always going to be a compromise wrt assembly standards; you either do it this way or split out a single star quad cable at the RCA end - maybe IMO a better way.  Or better still use 2x thin coax or twisted pair cables made up into a harness that better fits into the DIN plug.

Stripping back the RCA end like this is not a compromise,  its just not acceptable unless its a means of isolating a screen as in psuedo balanced operation - which this cable is not

The exposure of the thin gauge wires as this assembly has done has failed to secure them to the plugs at both ends & such a wire size tends to be very susceptible to damage & movement breakage without the correct support.

Adam I do not accept your reasoning for the strip back on the Profit plugs.  The Nuetrik cable clamp is one of the better around the plug market.

The chunky alloy body wiring access is easier than with the Preh,  I just prefer using them.

Ah ok - it looks perfectly acceptable for domestic use (look at the durability of a Hi-Line...) but i'd agree it would be poor practice for anything needing significant strain relief to deal with the professional environment.

Back on topic - i see i'm 28th. Never noticed that before.

James, you were #28 on 1st Jan 2014 with 44,391 Community Points.

Since then you have made 125 posts, accumulated an additional 454 points to a current total of 44,845.

At an avergae of more than 3 points per post, you are doing quite well..........

...and he still is but from No 3 spot.

No. 3 in ranking and in avatar. Spooky.

Jan-Erik , coincidences eh?

My avatar is a still from a moving one than blended from 3 to an 8, these being race numbers form NASCAR racers from the Earnhardt family.

30mm? That must be the world's shortest interconnect!
