What to pair with Neat Iotas? QUTE or CYRUS?

Posted by: lamby2244 on 03 January 2013

My kitchen zone (Sonos ZP90 + onkyo amp) is ready for an upgrade. I have a Naim set up in my lounge (NAP250, NDAC, 282 + NEAT Ultimatums) and it is open plan via my dining room to the kitchen. I have sonos zones in the rest of the house and because the NDAC causes a delay I put a ZP90, lip-synch and an amp connected to a set of MA R90s.

I now spend more time in the kitchen and want to upgrade the system. I have maybe stupidly started with speakers and have bought a set of NEAT Iotas; they sounded immense with my REL T-zero. I want to upgrade the Amp and was wondering what do I do......

My constraint is that I have less room in my kitchen for kit than I would like although it is not a small space. I am thinking do I go for a Unitiqute (i could stream direct to it or go via sonos if part of a zone) or a Cyrus 6 DAC with the ZP 90.

What do you think??

Cheers

I understand that Cyrus does not have the option to use a tablet to control the unit. For this reason alone I would opt for UnitiQute. And of course UnitiQute is a trusty Naim product.

The Unitiqute and Iotas is what I'm considering for my kitchen too.

According to Cyrus' FAQ their streamers can be controlled by smartphone with Songbird, PlugPlayer, etc. Can 6 DAC be controlled with tablet too? I cannot find Cyrus' own app in Apple apps store.

look on cyrus web site think its called cadence

The Cyrus Cadence app can be used with V3 of their streamer software. Even new units were not shipping with that version when Cadence was released, but they may be now. Dealers can do the update though, if necessary. They have also just reduced the price of the streamers if you buy without the NRemote, so that you control them with just the Cadence app.

When I looked into this a short time ago, my view was that the operation of the streamer control software was not as robust as Naim (nor was the Musical Fidelity version either). This may have now improved with the V3 software. The sound quality is of course a matter of personal taste. I might have considered Cyrus at the time if they had been more stable.

The Unitiqute and Cyrus Streamline 2 are more or less direct one-box competitors. There are dealers who stock both, so you could do a shoot-out. One space-orientated advantage of the Cyrus is that you can later add a matching half-width power amp or other Cyrus unit. Naim don't have that yet for the 'Qute.

I think I will have to go for a shoot out. Although I just heard today that the QUTE is down to £1100...... as of today!

I'd love to hear reviews of the Qute + Iotas.  I am thinking about that for my 'man cave' system.

Been using a pair of the tiny IOTAs with my SuperUniti for the past couple months - shockingly great! Fantastically musical speaker even at twice the price. Should be awesome with the Qute as well...highly recommended.

How do you have them positioned? Aparently they prefer being near a wall.... Mine come on Friday in blue!

Correction : Qute 24/192 SRP of £1150 - as per email received from Naim on Friday 4th Jan.

Great little system with IOTAs. Highly recommended.

Nice!  (I chose the white.)  I'm sure you'll enjoy them.  Keep in mind that the the break-in period with these is long - mine took ca. 250 hours to really come alive and give their best.  I have my pair toed in about 25 degrees with the inner corners of the cabinets about 2" from the wall.  The bass is much more tuneful and deep than the KAN 1s I had previously - and the neats are about 1/2 of their size!  Amazingly fast and extremely musical speaker, IMHO.

I had been considering Kans, and nSats (both hard to find used here in the States), but my little "man cave" area is so small that I want to go smaller.  Will listen to the Iotas, and the little Rega RS1's, and a few others, with a Qute.  I'm wondering if the Qute price dropped in the US.  My dealer people are all at the Las Vegas show so I'll find out in a few days.

Does the NAP 100 fulfil this role now? Just checked the dimensions and they are the same as the UQ.

It would appear to, but there has been no sign of Naim endorsing it for that purpose as far as I am aware

Agreed - curious that. Just been looking at the preamp outs for Uniti and UQ:

Uniti has preamp out via DIN (as per normal for Naim) for upgrading with eg NAP 200 (which has matching DIN input). That method is tried and tested.

Conversely, while UQ does have preamp out, it's via 2 x RCA. NAP 100 has 2 x RCA input and a DIN input for power amp in. So how would the two actually hook up? Please forgive my basic ignorance here - I'm quite interested to know as fairly soon I'm going to have to decide whether to keep hold of either my Uniti or my UQ and sell the other...

As fas as I see it, it's just 2 x RCA to 2 XRCA, unless you get a DIN to 2 x RCA lead, hich is easily done I think
