HDX - NAS Capacity?
Posted by: GraemeH on 04 January 2013
My HDX is 1tb. Am I right in thinking that the NAS backup device I am going to buy can only be used solely for that purpose - ie it cannot have additional material on it for streaming - and therefor a 1tb NAS is all the capacity I should buy?
Thanks,
Graeme
Interesting question Graeme.
I also use a 1tb HDX but have it hooked up to a 12Tb NAS drive, and have approx 4Tb of music on it.
I decided to put all music into a single music store and have everything on the NAS (with a seperate off line back up).
I don't think you have to have a dedicated NAS and feel sure it can be used for other items.
Are you confusing the matter with the latest 2tb HDX which can also store mp3 music?
Think of the NAS as disk storage available on your network for storing data and this data is available to other computers/devices on your network. Follow Naim's instructions for setting it up for use with your HDX and remember to take regular "offline" backups as Cbr600 mentioned. Other amounts of NAS space can be used for whatever you want. I use my NAS for storing music, photos, business data etc...
By the way going for 1TB to match a 1TB HDX really limits what else you can use it for. Once you get into the NAS thing you will probably find that you need to expand it or buy another and migrate your data. Costing more money, time and hassle in the long run.
I would not install anything less than 3 gb disks if I were to buy a nas and a disk today. would go for the new Western digital red disks that are optimized for use in a 24/7 nas, but you should be sure that the disk you buy for a nas is on the manufacturer's list of recommended drives for the nas model you are buying.
I use my nas for backup of my ns01, for downloaded music, and for sharing other files I need access to on the computers I use.
With a backup disk in the hdx, and backup on a nas, and maybe an extra usb disk backup or one of the free cloud backup sollutions many things should go wrong if you lose all data, but of course extra backup should be taken by the downloads that are not backed up on the internal hdx 1 tb model.

The original HDX used to have 2 drives with one being used for back up, but the newer HDX are either SSD drives or are fitted with single hard drives.
As above. You can use the NAS for everything. Just set up a share or shares for music, find it on the HDX, make it into a Store on the HDX and off you go. Or just use the back up to NAS routine on the HDX.
I have a four bay QNAP, two mirrored pairs, ripped music and downloaded music in two shares on Disc 1and I don't mess about with it other than ripping from the HDX or adding downloaded music to the other share. Everything else goes on Disc 3. It's not essential but it keeps things tidy in my head.
Every time I rip or add, I do an external USB back up.
G, you can most definitely use the nas to store music to be played via your HDX!
With the 1 tb version of the HDX, you can only play music from cd's you ripped yourself. If you add a nas to your network, you can download music from other sources in to a "share" folder on the nas and play it with the HDX. So if you want to download and store music from any of a variety of online sources, that is a great way to go -- add a nas.

That's great - So if I get a 2tb NAS it can be my HDX backup and have other music folders to add stuff for streaming purposes? Why did I think I'd read that the backup disc could not have other stuff on it I wonder....G
Possibly because you were reading about cloning ... I used to clone my Mac disk to an external firewire drive ... so if the Mac stopped working owing to my fiddling I could always boot from the clone and all would be well ... as it was a clone it made sense to have one exactly the same size.
Lots of folk use a NAS in RAID mode, but I'm not always sure this is so good ... if you are using it for music only then why not just copy the music from disk 1 to disk 2 ... this way if you accidently delete from disk 1 then it is still on disk 2 ... so you can copy it back. RAID plus a disk copy is the best of both worlds.
The HDX just looks for where its music is kept ... so you can have a very large NAS if you want and it doesn't have to be dedicated ... however, it may cause problems if another device is retrieving data from the same disc as the HDX at the same time - depends on how well the NAS handles this and how fast the disk responds. So a NAS dedicated to the job may be preferable.

Thanks, most comprehensive. G

It is the share or the folder on a share that you set as your bakcup location for the HDX, you will be told when you set the share up for backup that all files in the location will be deleted.

Thanks folks - Purchsed a 3tb Western Digital My Book Live.....will set-up tomorrow so better keep to the white wine tonight! G
Not to scare you more than needed but I think some have had problems streaming from the live books, it may be a good idea to check forum before you start setting up the nas.
