Occasional problem starting up nd5 xs

Posted by: Ray2 on 06 January 2013

Hi everyone.  I bought an nd5 xs in May 2012 with SN32xxxx, updated with latest firmware as of today.  Even from the first day of ownership I occasionally found that the unit would not power up properly when switched on.  More specifically, the display area would not indicate "ND5 XS" ... "...initializing..."  etc.  Invariably the unit would not function when this phenomenon is encountered.  I would say this occurs about 1 to 2 times out of every 10 times that I switch on the unit.  On restarting the unit it would be functional again.  I do not remember having owned a piece of audio equipment that behaved in this manner.

Has anyone else encountered this with their unit or could provide any useful advice.  I am 2+ hours from my dealer and would like to avoid a trip if there is a viable solution to this issue.

Thank you in advance and Happy New Year.

Ray, I bought mine about a month before you. I found the same thing happened if I switched mine off and then straight back on e.g. If I'd been having NAS or network problem and was trying a reboot of the ND5.

There was never a problem if I switched it off, waited a couple of minutes, then switched back on.

it is very rare now that I switch it off as I have installed Ethernet switches and network performance has been much more stable.

hope that helps

I agree with IanG - this sounds more like a problem with your network setup than any fault with the ND5xs. Have you fixed your IP address, for example?

I had exactly the same problem with my Superuniti. Naim told me to send it back. They had it a month and I recently got it back. Unfortunately they gave no information about the fault.

My dealer arranged for the unit to be collected from me by a courier, so I didn't have to travel. I found that the problem gradually got worse, to the point where it took about ten attempts to switch back  on correctly after the last firmware upgrade. If I were you I would contact your dealer or Naim about this.

Thank you everyone for your responses.  They have been very helpful.  I will look into my network status again.  In my case it likely isn't the network because the nd5 was behaving this way even before I configured any streaming (I was playing from USB flash drive).  10 resets sound like a lot.  The most I have had to do was 3, so far.  As of now I am at 7 for 7.  Hopefully the streak continues.  I wish I could leave the unit on all the time but the power in my neighbourhood is unreliable. I have had to replace a cable receiver that was fried by a surge this past summer.  Plus, I notice the nd5 runs a lot warmer than the nait xs even when idle.  I could not leave it on full-time during the summer because it made my non-AC bedroom too uncomfortably warm to sleep.

Thank you all again and happy listening!
