Dumb NAS Noob.....Heeeelp!

Posted by: GraemeH on 06 January 2013

Well, I've studied the HDX manual 4.8.4 and I'm none the wiser to this simple question:

Before starting to set up a backup through the HDX menu system do I first need to set up a folder on the NAS called HDX Backup or some such.....or do I do that all through the HDX?

Thanks, G

I am usiing an unitiserve, guess the desktop client is the same for hdx.

Thats the way i did it....

* create a folder on the nas

* mount this folder as network share in the naim client

* once you synchronized mount that share as backup-share

* do the backup.....

You need to set up a share on the nas called what ever you want to call it. Thats done via the NAS usually from your browser.

OK, step 1 is from the PC and steps 2, 3 and 4 are vis the HDX right?  Thanks so much for this! G

Created a new public share on the NAS called HDXBackup but the HDX is not finding it.  It is only reading the default 'Public' share which was already set up in the NAS as a backup location....hmmm!.....Just realised I have missed 'mount this folder as a network share' however the Naim manual is not clear on this step being necessary to create a backup?

Could this be the problem?

Thanks

Graeme

Answering my own question.....yes and no.  I've now enabled network share of the HDXBackup folder, green light on fine, but the HDX will not set it as backup.  'Please Wait' the screen tells me before reverting back to the 'Home' menu with no backup established.

what are we going to do now and what are we going to do now and what.....etc etc?  G

If the hdx/software doesnt find the folder you can type in the path manually (add new share)..... once it is visible you should be able to mount it as share and as backup folder further on.....

why your hdx sticks in the process..... is the folder empty? guess so, as its new.... No idea, sorry.....

maybe restart everything and give it another try, maybe with a new folder.....

Thanks Mak - I have rebooted everything and tried every 'enabled' empty folder and the HDX simply will not allow the backup to be set....GRRR!

These issues are often sorted with a reboot, as the HDX will then rescan and find new share

Graeme,

Don't panic, I've had glitches before. Contact naim and they can look at your system remotely and correct the matter.

Annoying I know, but worthwhile in the end

Walk away for a while to let the mind relax ( you know the old wood for trees saying !)

Just a Thought Graeme, have you looked on Naim website at their recent knowledge base area. Their may be some guidance there

Graeme,

Just had a look at my HDX manual. It says that if you go to music stores page on screen (4.8.4) thn there is a button you can select that states "add back up"

You should select this button and then select your newly created NAS store(with its green light) as the backup location

This can then be checked using the "view back up" button

Thanks, this is indeed exactly what I'm doing but getting nowhere.  The desktop client sees all the shares and they are all green lighted on the HDX it's simply when I try to select as backup like the manual advises that I get 'Please Wait' and then after about 15 seconds back to a previous window in the menu.....G

Posted on: 06 January 2013 by Cbr600

do you then check using the view back up button and does this show the store you are trying to use?

if so then it may well be that the system is sorted and is waiting for its first daily back up to be done when yopu are not using the system

Other tyhing to try is the set upof another NAS store with the file name inclsuing specific titles that the HDX looks for such as the work music (see manual for details on this)

good luck and keep the faith

Have you tried on the dtc to set the share as backup, and yes looked in the list of available backup destinations. Otherwise work for support.

TBH it all happened so fast.....I think I had misunderstood the fact that a network share cannot be a backup which I what I thought you had to do from the manual Doh!.....click, click and it was fixed.....a virtual pint to Phil! G

PS I think GerryMcG was onto it......21hrs of backup to go!
