Members AWOL!

Posted by: Dustysox on 08 January 2013

G'day,

I've noticed recently a lot of the "ol" crowd seem to have disappeared, or are posting less frequently, eg Dark Bear, Polar Bear, Gale 401 Geoff C and loads more besides.

I welcome new members, but I am puzzled by the absence of well respected whose input I very much miss reading about.

Evolution? Not sure, but guys...please come back....miss you

Hi Fabio 1,

Not really answering my question

However, I do take your point, although i did point out I welcome new members. These are very exciting times in the world of audio reproduction and I for one love reading the banter from all members.

Well, Winnie, a distinguished gent such as yourself should know that a diet of steak 'n' kidney pud, claret and champagne will thicken the waist somewhat

Any new tricks?

I think its the same for all forums - & most other phases of life - peeps move on, loose interest, move to that abomination stuff from north of the border or just shake off the moral coil.

The bear people both post from time to time, gale401 has quit (like I'm outta here) & his ID & history has been junked.

Lets welcome new members with (maybe/hopefully) new ideas & enjoy the experienced old dogs with some wisdom & some of the tired old mythology,   but all with hopefully some light-hearted banter.

Every one is free to do what he wants,Mike-B.I suggested the promoter of this thread(hello Dustysox, nice to meet you too)a way to go on reading these pages ,but at the same time I hope ol Forum's members  will stay here for decades:they contributed the birth of it, giving it specific and nice characteristic,IMHO.That's why I choosed this Forum

Having been a member here for less than 11 months, it seems the tempo of topics/responses may have slowed recently in the the absence of the aforementioned "ol" crowd.  Hopefully a new crop of contributors will help reinvigorate a bit of that PRaT.  That's why I think it's important to welcome newbies with encouragement, no matter how many times their question may have been previously asked.

Well I have been a member since 2003, so almost ten years.

This is not the first time that the "old" membership seemed to leave in significant numbers.

It is a cyclical thing, just like the England Cricket team, or a Great Cathedral choir.

The forum is bigger than any generation of members. So should we, who should be super-annuated, such as me, persist?  The truth is, I think,  that we get to where we want with respect to music, interests and replay, and gradually fade away. Some of us persist to the boredom of newer members! ...

It is always an over-simplification to suggest that the same questions arrive, and have already been answered. That may be an irritant to those who have seen the cycle once let alone twice, but the same old truths do not go away.

The truth is that certain truths remain, but others actually evolve.

When vinyl was a significant aspect of music in the home - rather than a hobby indulged in by a tiny minority - the priorities were different from today's situation where music from digital sources are the major consideration.

Naim's expertise in making superb amplification remains a constant of course, and the company seems to have made huge steps into being at least as comptent in the digital arena! Naim speakers continue to divide, but that is nothing new either! Love them or hate them, at least they do not dumb down to the popular demand for "easy listening."

The remaining "old timers" here, including the estimable M Parry, have a huge experience, and should not be discounted, but we old skool occasional posters do have the wisdom of age, however disconcerting that may be for newer members.

The arguments are not more trenchant, or less, than a decade ago, though I think that the moderation is more stringent, and rightly so. It gives the younger members more chance, which is a good thing in my view.

ATB from George

The big changes in technology over the past few years probably account for some of the falling off.  Some engage with the evolution, others skulk off quietly content with where they are at.  G

Hi Mike,

Thank you for the heads up.

Hi George,

As always well said. I sure would miss your contributions. Don't you dare go anywhere.

Hi Steve,

I noticed that. Must be a hibernation thing!!

Posted on: 09 January 2013 by Steve J

It must be the unusually mild weather we're having for this time of year.

I imigine the frequency with which people post on the forum is more to do with other things in their life (job, holidays etc) than with changing technology. For example, I know I tend to browse here more on Tuesdays and Wednesdays which are my days off.

That said, I also imagine that when you've been here a long time, some subjects do get a bit repetitive and you might occasionally give them the miss, resulting in fewer posts.

And (on a brighter note for many newcommers) I guess that some of the older menbers have actually popped their cloggs. We don't have an "obituary" column, so I guess we'll never know about them.

Cheers

Don

What's the cut-off point for the *old crowd* ? I've been here since 2000. Where do I fit ? Do Canadians count ? My whole sense of identity hinges on this ; I need to know, the anxiety is killing me.

No. 33 (but aiming for 33 1/3)

True Don.

I don't have regular working hours (I either work when I choose or when deadlines dictate) so my posting tends to be erratic.

I tend not to contribute very much to the Streaming forums (streaming doesn't interest me in the slightest), or the Hi Fi ones (I've had the same system for nine years and I'm not in the market for anything new for the foreseeable future due to budget constraints - and those "Shall I get a 202 or 252?" or "DR or not to DR" threads don't hold much interest for me either), but I do like looking at other people's system pics and enjoy reading stuff about turntables.

So, mostly Padded Cell, Home Theatre (but mostly for movies or TV shows rather than hardware) and Music Room for me really.

Over the past decade the Forum has changed, but isn't better or worse - there used to be some terrible arguments about pointless crap like Mana supports and the like. That said, it would be good to have the likes of Matthew Robinson and Nick Lees back again. Some bemoan an alleged lack of civility these days but AFAICR, the likes of Stallion (remember him?) were not particularly civil.
