Problems playing WAV files to Naim Unitiqute using Kinsky

Posted by: The Pied Piper on 10 January 2013

Dear All,

This follows on from a similar issue identified in 2010 when trying to play m4a files on a Naim Unitiqute with Kinsky.
https://forums.naimaudio.com/di...ent/1566878605422549
(followed up by Steve H from Naim R&D).

WAV files will not play using the latest version of Kinsky on the Unitiqute and the problem was identified by Simon from Minimserver from the debug console report (at end of this message):
------------------------
Kinsky reads this list and sees that audio/x-wav (the correct MIME type
for WAV files) isn't on the list, so it won't send WAV files to the
Unitiqute.

Note that audio/wav is present in the list instead of audio/x-wav.
This is a Naim bug, as any MIME types that aren't in the official
IANA list are required to use the "x-" prefix. The official list is
at http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types and you'll see that
audio/wav isn't included and that the 'x-' prefix should in fact be used.

-------------------------------------

I guess that audio/wav is used for backward compatibility and that n-Stream (which does not have the problem) uses audio/wav.

Could audio/x-wav also be aliased to audio/wav in the next firmware (as x-m4a was added previously)? This would then comply with IANA and allow other control points to interface with teh Naim Unitiqute.
-----------------------
I have tried Twonky with Kinsky and there is the same problem (with same debug console report).

Think this is something for you to take up directly with Naim. Kinsky can't properly control a Naim streamer anyway, least not when I tried it, so I don't think forum members are going to be particularly bothered.

Why don't you just use nStream?

It works without problem with a Vortexbox and UQ for example.

As Andy says this is not really the right place for such a discussion ... I would suggest a Kinsky developers forum might lead you to some answers. I doubt any will be forthcoming here.

Unless VortexBox has improved since I uninstalled it, it doesn't handle Wav very well. Asset UPnP, on the other hand...

I don't use Wave files so wouldn't know .... Asset only runs on Windows so not for me .... in fact decided I really don't need UPnP in my set-up if I replace my UQ with the new DAC V1 ... so my post is probably not helpful if you want to play WAV files ... I use FLAC on the VB. However, I know UQ/VB works very well as it is playing in my home office right now and nStream works well with it. So I still think moving from Kinsky to nStream may help solve the problem.

Hi!

There has been reports frequently on this forum that Kinsky control point is not working properly with Naim stream players. I had also given up after some Kinsky version, which seems to have been built specifically for Linn players. In fact, it has been said Naim players function decently only with Naim UPnP control point (which is n-stream). The problem with n-stream is that it is available only for iOS. So, some iDevice (at least a second hand iPod Touch) seems necessary if you want to use Naim UPnP players.

Any other experiences?

istream in order to use the volume etc is in direct communication with the uniti. Upnp control points such as kinsky do not have this depth of control.

Thanks Pied Piper, that is really useful info to share on this forum. I would drop Steve a line at Naim about it directly and perhaps if he is ok about it share here what he says. Technicalities aside there is a 'public interest' aspect in terms of interoperability for those that don't want to have to use Apple devices as controllers.

BTW Kinsky works with the NDS ( or did, off to re check)

If you go that way be careful - 1st generation iPod Touches (like mine) have been rendered obsolete and won't run the latest Nstream. I use Bubbleupnp which is available on Android and can control the volume on my Superuniti while I wait for the Android Nstream.

Thanks for all the comments.

I posted on the Linn development forum yesterday and they have incorporated a 'fix' into their nightly build (effectively adding audio/wav as an option in addition to audio/x-wav). They seem to move very quickly.

I tested this last night on Mac OS X and Windows and wav files can now play through a Naim Unitiqute using Kinsky.

Of course n-Stream is available for controlling streaming to the Unitiqute but does not have a version available for PC or Mac (would be really useful!). So a controller such as Kinsky which has versions for all platforms (as is free open source) offers the flexibility to control streaming from a computer.

I presume that this fix will be incorporated into the next Kinsky version.

Simon, do you have a contact email for Steve so that I can contact Naim direct about this and the m4a problems? Or should I just email support@naimaudio.com?
