Are Naim Members/Owners getting younger?

Posted by: Tony2011 on 11 January 2013

I have been following several threads through out the last few years and  I have the feeling that the buying power has shified  towards a younger audience considering the  number of new hardware releases from  Naim which seems geared  towards a more "simplistic plu&play" alternative to accomodate the market despite launching the S800  for a specific market.

I suppose the company does need to be competitive to survive.

This should be good news, shouldn't it?

Would appear that mental age is reducing, whilst members actually age.

Howard,

As the great Nina Hagen once said: "What you mean?"

I'm 35 and have owned a Naim system since I was 21. I am however the only person I know who has anything comparable. It does seem (going by the hi-fi forums I read) that most people who have such a thing are indeed older and I've seen no change in that trend in the 14 yrs since I started reading this forum or its predecessors. If anything, I would have said people on here were getting older.

I don't find this surprising. All my friends use ipod docks. Several have however shown interest in the uniti-type products in the last few months and are looking to go down that route - so I reckon that this is something Naim are doing well to pursue.

I've been a LP12 owner since '81 & a Naim owner since '84 - I'm 70 this year.

I bought my first hi-fi separate aged 17.

I bought my first Naim system aged 28.

I'm now 46.

My daughter is 13 and loves music - mainly iTunes downloads, but she 'gets' music which is the foundation of everything.

I'm slowly getting her to listen more deeply and appreciate more, so I have hopes that over time she will begin to understand the real depth and beauty that recorded music can offer.

Regarding Naim I had a long conversation over a drink at a Tom Tom summer event a few years back about the need for Naim to build 'bridge' products that allow the iPod generation to move from casual listening to something more serious. I think they're doing a pretty good job of it these days. The products don't all float my boat, but they are exactly what we need to keep Naim profitable and able to deliver the goods for another 40 years. Well done Naim IMO.

Dave,

Thank you for your contribution .

That was my main line of thinking. New, more affordable lines from Naim to attrack the more jovial music listener without detracting from their loyal customer followers while setting new standards.  All in good faith and also thanks to all who have taken the time with  their well-humoured contributions. Love you all.
