A Winged Victory For The Sullen

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 January 2013

Just discovered this little gem. Ambient, but majestic and involving with it, and one of the best piano sounds I have heard in a long time. It's on Erased Tapes. You get the code for a compilation download too.

Nigel,

curiously, Christopher has long suggested me Felt by Nils Frahm, who records for the same label and whose CD could be described in similar terms.

Nigel, Max,

Thanks for the heads-up. If you feel curious, maybe you'd like to lend an hear to Valgeir Sigurdsson (valgeir dot net). Darker and more experimental.

Have a nice day,

Maurice

PS: Congrats on your nth-Sats Max !

You might also like Mountains 'Centralia' which is streaming before release on pitchforkmedia just now.

I liked  Winged Victory... When I heard it last year but somehow forgot to buy it. Will remedy!

How nice that others have heard of this. I've ordered a copy of Valgeir Sigurdsson's rather jolly sounding 'Architecture of Loss'. It's certainly darker! Erased tapes seem to have lots of music in this vein - I suspect one can overdo it, but a few of these recent ambient electronic albums would be a very nice addition to the CD rack.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I would not want a collection of these sorts of recordings but one or two hit the spot. Do you like the minimalist works of Arvo Part (such as Alina-another lovely piano piece)?

Ah, Arvo Part.... I've got a few of his recordings, and Alina is probably my favourite, along with Symphony No 4.

Have a dig around Erased Tapes site, you will find plenty there, including the title of the OP. Plenty of free HQ downloads as well = a proper music site for the artist.

Felt is a fabulous album, wonderful late night music full of atmospherics, highly recommended. Was probably my fave album of 2011 along with Grace for Drowning. Would be great on a good pair of phones.

The Erased Tapes label has a lot of good stuff coming out on it, a real record label promoting small artists and well worth checking out. I went to a fifth anniversary of the label concert last year in Brighton with Nils Frahm and Winged Victory and they were attracting a very young crowd which was good to see.

OK, I 've ordered Felt. And Screws, which seems interesting. Now I must stop spending money!!

Thanks for the recommendation Maurice, what a fine album. I'm just glad my IBLs have controlled bass; there's a lot of subterranean stuff going on here. The Spendors I once owned would have been a disaster.

A late addition, but I've just discovered Eluvium. Listening to Copia right now, beautiful. If you're into ambient soundscapes (with touches of piano and strings), that might be of interest. See eluvium.net.

PS: And the covers are beautiful too, IMO.

Just discovered Atra Aeterna, a Canadian artist. Well worth a listen IMO. Start with Machinations and Of Fractures And Light EP. to have a taste of his music.
