Unable to stream BBC radio stations with HDX

Posted by: J.B on 21 January 2013

I've only recently bought my HDX and so far i've been unable to listen to any BBC stations. I can stream BBC R3 & R4 Hidef test stations listed in Naim Choice no problem but if i try and select any  BBC radio stations 1 through to 6 (all listed as wma 48kbps) it will not stream. The timer stays on 00.00. After a while the message 'Cannot connect to internet radio. This maybe caused by a short term internet problem. Please retry in a few minutes if the station is known to work in your area'.

Until this message appears the only way to navigate away from the radio is to switch of on the rear panel. Its only the BBC stations not playing all others work well.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi JB,

Strange you've had no replies on this, but I'll post my findings.

I have tried to get BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 and they play fine listed as wma 48kbs as you found.

I cannot, however get the BBC HiDef test channels to work, so vice versa to you.

I do, however, get a reliable stream of Radio Paradise at AAC 320 Kbps, and other higher rate bit streams, so I know it's not a problem with my broadband capacity.

I think there are a couple of reasons why some people can get a station and others not, not withstanding their own broadband's ability to stream higher bit rates, of course.

It would seem that Internet radio servers only have a certain capacity to stream and if there are a lot of people listening at any one time, you may struggle to get connected.  Secondly, depending on where you are in the world, this would appear to affect your ability to receive certain stations.

I think the bottom line is that as long as your HDX is receiving some channels at various bit rates and formats, it's most likely the issue you cannot receive certain stations, lies elsewhere than your HDX.  The question as to why you can't get certain BBC stations is any ones guess!  Try again at another time and another day, you may be more successful.

I'm not an expert by any means, but in lack of any other replies here, that's my take on it! The more informed here, may be able to help you further.  In the mean time, try powering your HDX and router down and up again and see if this solves the issue if you are still not getting connected today.

All the best

Thanks for your reply Jason. I've just tried radio paradise 320kbp and it works perfectly. The Naim dealer I bought my HDX from suggested powering everything down which I have done, but no difference. I can listen on my iPad and laptop to bbc radio no problem. Perhaps it doesn't think I have a TV licence

Ok, if you are able to get the stream on your iPad, then that begs the question why not on the HDX? This is way beyond my knowledge, but I would suggest a quick email to Phil Harris or any of the technical staff at Naim may help shed a bit of light on this for you.

If you do resolve this, I would be interested to hear the outcome, so keep us posted!

not sure on this one, but could it be that the HDX is set up to find stations in a certain region, and the beeb are not in that region?

My HDX has worked ok for last few years and picked up all the stations no issue

Just to keep those interested posted. Spoke with Phil and he suggested that it could be my BT  homehub. So new wireless router from Maplins and everything is eventually working as it should, all BBC stations available.

Thanks all for the help.

Thanks for the update.  Out of interest, was your your BT home hub the latest version (Home hub 3)?
