Cue sheet support?

Posted by: Veovis on 24 January 2013

Hi,

I prefer to use wav files with cue sheets for meta data (with foobar or SB Touch). I would guess Asset doesn't support cue files since Spoon seems to hate their guts. But are there other server options that support cue files with for example the Naim ND5XS? I have read in these forums that getting Logitech's media server UPnP to work well with Naim products is a bit hit or miss.

Thx

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question regarding Asset supprting cue sheets.

But if you want to use LMS as a UPnP Server, you could just as well store your music in flac. LMS with transcode to WAV as a standard for UPnP. I only recently discovered this while connecting my TV to the LAN. I knew that it cannot read flac, but it displayed my whole library nonetheless. And it said "LPCM" under each track.

Thanks for your reply! I know that LMS can transcode flac files to PCM on the fly. I've used this server setting with flac files and the SB Touch for years. But as I understand it LMS UPnP plug-in is not very easy to get to work with Naim network players? If it is, it would pretty much solve my problem without having to convert every single multitrack wav file into single track flac files. LMS does a decent job with cue files, as long as you use multitrack wav (or flac) files. The only problem is the lack of unicode support, but that can be worked around.

But I'm still interested to hear if there are other solutions? Since Naim seems to prefer wav before flac files the benefits of cue sheet support should have crossed their mind, right?

Quite right. Though I think that this is rather a matter of the server supporting it. The streamer merely receives the streamed data and this going to be music data plus meta data extracted by means of the cue from the multitrack file. So it shouldn't matter to the streamer whether this data has been generated from single track or multitrack files and cue sheets.

But I have to admit, that this is only a logical assumption on my behalf without really knowing it for sure.

I've no experience with cue files, but JRiver Media Center seems to offer some support for them, and can be configured as a UPnP server, (with some very powerful features). If you're interested, have a look here:

If you post a clear question on their forum a develop will usually answer promptly.

I have the latest J River and it indeed has exellent cue sheet support. Even better than Foobar when using single track wavs + cue. I prefer Foobar for SQ reasons (through Wasapi and USB/V-Link) though, but using J River as a UPnP server definitely sounds like the thing to try when I buy a Naim streamer.

Thanks both of you!
