Twonky Server (QNAP) – Sort by ALBUM ARTIST

Posted by: Lorenz on 29 January 2013

Still pretty new and pretty amazed by my Uniti 2 paired with Ovator 400s.

Still hunting for the PERFECT streaming solution. I'm 100% Mac biased so Windows and Linus solutions are sorted out by definition. At the moment I'm using Allegro Music Server (AMS) which elegantly grabs any iTunes information – unfortunately the app lacks good support for Cover Art and (as it is based n iTunes – no support for FLAC files). For FLAC files I'm trying/using Asset UPNP which streams these files like a charme (including Cover Art) but lacks support of/for iTunes.

Now back to the topic "Twonky Server (QNAP) – Sort by ALBUM ARTIST". I have a QNAP TS-219P II (3.8.1)  with Twonky Server (7.0.9) installed – works extremely fast and serves Cover Art like hell – BUUUUUT – one thing drives me crazy: I can't find any solution to stream ALBUM ARTIST instead of ARTIST. Any idea how to do this?

Hi Lorenz,

I have the same NAS and firmware installed as you and have the same issue although that doesn't bug me as much as it does you by the sound of it.

What really does bug me though is that I like to browse by folder but when I do this it lists the tracks of an album alphabetically which really drives me mad as I obviously like to listen to an album in the order that the artist intended, I've made some enquiries about this and have been told that it is the way dBpoweramp has ripped the tracks, I guess this makes sense but I really don't want to rip my collection again, I'm almost at the point of buying a ReadyNas Duo to see if that has the same issue.

Bizarrely enough if I search by folder on a Sonos streamer then it lists the tracks in the correct order and that is being fed by the Twonky server in the Qnap, it's all very strange, the beauty of networked audio eh.

Sorry Lorenz, I don't want to steal your post its just that it looks like we have similar issues here, personally I blame Twonky.

Browsing by folder implies that the contents of the folder are browsed alphabetically, so to get tracks to appear in track number order you need to prepend the track name with the track number (and the disc number in the case of multi disc sets). dBpoweramp will do this for you automatically if you set it up to be done. This won't (or shouldn't) affect the track name when you browse by tags. If you are bold you could use JRiver Media Center to rename all your tracks files in this form. Or analyse why you need to browse by folders, and then make your tags give you the same result.

Lorenz,

you could also install Logitech Media Server on your QNAP. It s availabe als a plugin from the main menu. It will not only serve Squeeze Boxes but also as a UPnP server and do exatly

what you want.

Hi - I have similar setup (QNAP > Twonkly > Uniti) and have a couple of anomolies I struggle to resolve. On the QNAP music is added via an external harddrive and has been ripped on to hdd mostly via NServe with some ripped via normal PC (not Apple). Issues are:

(1) All albums are only able to be picked up in 'By Folder' on Uniti and can't get to search via Artist / Album / Genre etc.

(2) When song plays on Uniti it shows as 'unknown' in for both Album & Artist!

I took advice of others and downloaded Asset UPNP but (and likely my lack of skill!) can't get to point to NAS as only selects existing Windows shared music - any thoughts to direct this correctly (as first port of call in endeavour to correct)??

Ultimately the main thing is that all music is picked up and plays it damn well....would be nict, however, to get full functionality sorted!

Cheers.....Lindsay

It's a bit off-topic but how do you manage to show cover art using Asset UPnP? I can direct Asset to my music folders (/Volumes/MUZIEK/iTunes/iTunes Media), but no cover art is shown in n-stream. Any hint would be welcome. I also tried Majestic, Allegro and Playback, but also no cover art.

hi andelun,

hmmm - it work's fine for me. Just re-checked if there are any options within Asset UPNP – didn't find any. BUT if you have the same issues with other servers as well I would check and double check  that cover art is REALLY included/embedded with the flac files.

I use minim server with great success. it works with qnap, mac, windows. it support every tag you like. it is possible to configre a lot of things. it is very good for classical music. it has a possible to encode flac to wav.

After 1 week of changing settings (configuration) in Asset and in n-stream and closing down and starting up Asset there was cover art. First Asset wouldn't start up after closing but after several hours I did started up. I think the beta version for Mac is instable and the collobaration of several UPnP servers with n-stream too is not that stable. But I am happy seeing coverart and Asset offers good access to my library.
