Posted by: Cbr600 on 29 January 2013

In recognition of a few requests from other forum members, this is the start of a new thread. So for all you "steam heads" , rather than petrol heads, or maybe your an electric sort of a fella, this is your thread to post stories or images about railways and their associated items.

So fella's ( and members of the fairer sex), show us what makes your heart pump faster.

Let's start at the beginning with stephensons rocket

Go on then, I'll bite -

I love this old (1940s?) Union Pacific behemoth, "Big Boy". 6,200 horsepower. Not sure it would pass environmental muster these days though

No idea what this is (it's in Connecticut somewhere) but it sure is purdy.

Gresley's masterpiece LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard, and surely the sexiest (and of course still the fastest) steam loco ever?

I've always wanted to travel across Canada in this. Anyone ever done it?

Great to see the early streamlining of the engines, really alluring

Actually meant "stonking", as in FAB

Richard,

The angle of your photos suggest you might be a linesman, or a trespasser ?

Absolutely NOT the case.

Image 1 I took from the end of a platform with a telephoto lens. The second picture is a scan of an image I bought recently and was taken during a depot visit.

Coincidentally I watched a notorious film on the dangers of trespassing on the railway this afternoon. Called "The Finishing Line" it was made in 1977 and shows the consequences all too graphically of playing lineside.

I'm no Railway enthusiast but I've alwys loved the look of these engines. Nice picture Richard.

Another scan of a bought in image. This was taken at the Crewe Works Open Day in July 1979 that I attended, although without a camera. The Class 47 is seen in the Diesel Test area where my late father worked for 20+ years.

Railways are in my blood and the older I get the more they continue to fascinate me.

And some Polish stream locos working in their home environment.

In 2001, Mrs. Hook and I took the Blue Train from Pretoria to Cape Town.  It was a wonderful experience...
