I should add that when we first set sail it was pitch dark.  2 hours of hell and the captain came on saying "For the safety of passengers & crew we are returning to port".  Getting back only took 45 minutes.....when we reached port at 1:00am it was closed and so we had to remain on board before setting sail to "try again" at 6:00am.

The next 16hrs were hell.........and we were only going to Bruge for a long weekend for my wifes 40th 'treat'.

Sailing the North sea in January is not to be recommended.  G

Redmires!

You are correct a theft has occurred involving a number of forum thugs.

Action will be taken

No forum thugs or thuggery .

Just a bit of fun to breath some life back.

Another thread idea.

The avatar hijack was not very funny and indeed, the admin take this very seriously.  This and certain other realted posts and threads bordered on bullying, something that will not be tolerated here.  Take this is a formal warning.

I'd separate out whether the lorry, chainsaw, wheelbarrow etc threads were funny, very funny, or otherwise from the avatar hijack.  The latter is clearly a breach of forum etiquette, unfunny and unacceptable.

The threads could have been started without the avatar hijack and this may have been more acceptable as a gentle hint.

Personally, I thought the 'wheelbarrow' inspired and very funny.  I laughed out loud. G

This is probably the most enthralling of our customers' floating palaces.

And she was built to race, and the lavish interior fixtures are all designed with significant heeling in mind. She is very fast under sail, especially for such a heavy craft.

The resurrection of the clipper mast and sail arrangement ("Dyna-Rig") was quite an engineering feat, and - in essence - they didn't know for absolute sure whether it would actually work until they actually built it, the design idea having existed since the 1960s and the computer (and actual) models since all suggesting it was a winner, but that's often not how boats work.

Quite a story, and much online - google "Maltese Falcon Yacht" for more. The whole project was orchestrated by Tom Perkins (who made his money with Hewlett Packard and venture capital since). He wrote the operating software himself. Maltese Falcon was then, and remains, the largest privately owned sailing yacht. He has since sold her.

I've been on board, but sadly not to sea on her.

Yours to charter for $120,000 per day, and she was sold for $60,000,000 last time, but I'm sure they'd consider an offer (the current owner is Greek..!)

I saw and lusted after this yacht a few years ago when it was moored at English Harbour, Antigua. A lovely thing indeed Rod.

Steve Jobs' yacht was impounded recently - I'm not surprised as, from an aesthetic point of view, it is very offensive.

Not as weird as "A", Philippe Starke's floating toilet-cum-conning-tower inspired yacht-thing.
