Fairly recently I made a viny rip of Bryter Layter on the Antilles re-issue. It was so very much better than the last '20 bit remastered' CD that I have, I sent it to a friend of mine who is somewhat in the music business and a friend of Joe Boyd. At their last dinner meeting he handed JB a copy of my transcribed Bryter Layter, and was informed that it was John Wood who oversaw the last remastering. He is still awaiting some feedback from Joe Boyd as to the quality of the vinyl transfer. What it does serve to show is that there is still much room for improvement on the seminal and stellar brief works of Nick Drake who both fortunately and unfortunately was a supernova of music scene. And like a supernova, we only became aware of his existance some time after his demise. I did try the Fruit Tree Box set LPs and found them to sound almost identical to the CD with added surface noise. I am fairly certain they were cut with the digital master.

My friend however has a complete set of the ND records on the original UK-pressed pink label Island release, which he ripped for me. I can see why the pink labels command so much $$ on auction sites, but the Antilles is very, very close to them.

The only digital sources I have is my PC and iPAD. On my iPAD the MP3 of the vinyl album sounded better than the MP3 remaster......now there is a thing!

There are also two books that I would highly recommend about Nick's life:

Darker Than The Deepest Sea: The Search for Nick Drake by Trevor Dann.

&

Nick Drake: The Pink Moon Files by Jason Creed

For those of you who like Jazz, Brad Mehldau's interpretation of "Time Has Told Me" on Mehldau's CD "Where Do You Start" is worth a listen.

And not forgetting the most moving tribute to NIck: John Martyn's "Solid Air" is subliminal.

Fan of Nick Drake here.

Although he was already dead by the time I became musically aware, I would hear his tracks on John Peel, one of which was in his all time festive fifty  at the turn of the millennium. Peel greatly lamented the poor standing of the young man's work at the time and I am sure he would be pleased to see its recent resurgence, as exemplified by this reissue and the tribute gigg at the Albert Hall a few years ago.
