J River MC 18 for Mac OSX
Posted by: Peter_RN on 10 February 2013
Not sure how interesting it might be to Mac users but J River MC 18 for OSX is due for release by Feb: 22nd.
Early-bird licences are being offered on the J River forum website at half price ($25) up until that date and anyone interested is warned that it will be Audio only to begin with (who needs anything else) and a little rough around the edges.
I have found J River running on PC to be the best music serving software that I have been able to find so far; I trust that in time (if not immediately) it will be equally good on OSX.
Regards
Peter
I am wondering if there are any happy OSX JRiver users now ( a couple of months after the last post on this thread)
I am looking for an iTune alternative. Do you know if Jriver and iTune can coexist? It looks unlikely since iTune modify the name of the files, when you modify the metadata.

iTunes can be set to stop changing file names. In Preferences-> Advanced uncheck "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized." I turned that off many years ago.
I am using JRiver Media 19 with Mac 10.8. Jriver is pretty decent on the Mac Mini. It is the implementation of the auto login, mapped drive that is driving me up the wall - i would like "her" to be a OFF and ON thing but till this day (after 2 weeks of using the JRiver on the Mac Mini) I have resigned to the fact that I need to VNC in to connect the mac mini to the mapped drive. I store all my files on the NAS and no, i do not want to copy another bunch of files to a portable drive to be plugged into the mac mini (although this will solve my problem)
Experience with Jriver - score of 7-8 (10 being the best)
Experience with Mac Mini and the mapped drive - score of 2!!!!
Your mileage may wary ![]()
Hi Shing,
I also use JRiver Media Centre 19 on a Mac Mini and have my music library as AIFF on a Synology NAS. I have the music folder from the NAS and JRiver Media Centre included in the Login items under Users & Group settings. This way the NAS folder gets opened automatically during startup. The only downside is that the music folder is opened on the desktop. But since i use the mini headless it's not a problem for me.
JRiver Media Center 19 works perfectly stable for me and together with JRemote i find it far better then iTunes with IOS Remote. In iTunes i often had broken links to my music files when i tried playback when the NAS was still in standby. In JRiver my NAS connection works flawless. I can also control playback via another Media Center on my macbook and can even listen to my music library on the go on my iphone/ipad. Still the looks of the program needs some work and i hope that will be improved in the near future.
Great to get some feedback on Jriver and Jremote. Both software has been great so far. IMHO, it is still no match for the HDX/nDac/ps555 combo. With the Jriver, I am using the Hiface II usd to s/pdif link to the nDac. Timing is a bit off, the drum kicks seems to loss it's momentum mid way, it's has the digital edge sound to it (the hdx combo does not exhibit this characteristic at all). It sounds thinner - voices are no longer bold and rounded. The PRAT factor is definitely lost in the Jriver on the mac mini.
I am just wondering how much does the hiface interface contributes to this factor? I am using similar cables from the digital source to nDac.
I just started on this journey, it's more of an experiment rather than a replacement for my hdx/nDac/ps555 combo
It would be great to hear feedback on this ![]()
I have the Mac Mini connected via an optical Wireworld Supernova cable to the NDac. Comparing to playing direct from USB stick on the DAC which i think is probably the best possible sound quality possible from the NDac, the Mac Mini is slightly less open and detailed but the difference is too small for me to be worried about it. I would like to try an Audiophilleo USB/Spdif converter someday to see if this brings an improvement over the optical cable.
The Naim streamers/HDX seem to sound the best so far feeding the NDac but i find that too much redundancy as a source, i'd rather use an NDS then. But for the money i find the NDac/Mac Mini hard to beat.
