Nd5xs upgrade ?

I wonder why a Ndac is considered to be an upgrade to the ND5xs? The ND5xs already has a DAC inside and what sense does it makes to operate 2 dacs.? Sorry. But I'm new to this.

Another dac e.g. the Ndac should be of better quality. Of course in many of the server/streamer solutions you end up with one unused dac if you add an external dac. The only current way to avoid this is to use the Unity serve wich need an external dac. This is the reason why some people would like Naim to release a dacless streamer to avoid this situation.

Hi Fred,
There are dac's that cost $199 and dac's that cost $10,000. Much variety of quality; all dac's are far from being the same.
Naim have a variety of technical options for putting together dacs, including the parts themselves and the internal layout in the cabinet. Even where the same part is used, Naim independently test each part and can be highly selective -- parts that pass the manufacturer's quality testing may be rejected by Naim. All contribute to quality, and ultimate cost.
tried ndx digital out to ndac and nd5 dig out to ndac NO DIFFERENCE . NDS5 with xp5 psu with analogue out very small improvement
settled for nds5 digital output with the xp5 psu on the dac

I looked at your profile to see what the rest of your system is but nothing there. So can't comment on this.
To the OP I also looked at your profile to see what the rest of your system is but nothing there. I agree with Bart and depending on the rest of your system I would suggest that you should be able to hear any differences between other DACs.
I tried several other DACs in my Naim system before settling on the Naim DAC. I could very clearly hear a difference between them all. I and when I moved my XPS 2 from the CDX to the DAC there was also a big difference for the better.
