DVD5 doesn't play CDs...long shot...

Posted by: Graham Ridgway on 24 February 2013

I have a DVD5 that plays DVDs fine, however I have discovered that it doesn't play CDs (when I tried to sell it to someone who wanted it to play CDs!).  It's not worth much and certainly not viable to go back to the factory to fix.

So any pointers on what it might be?  Is  there any diagnostic info I can get?

Cheers

Hi Graham,

I'm not sure if this will help, as others reporting your problem have ended up returning the unit to Naim for attention.

However, might be worth a bash anyway, so here's the link to a previous topic.

I recently got rid of my CD player, in favour of an HDX, but am thinking about keeping hold of my DVD 5 as a transport into my DAC.

Regards,

Dave.

Did it play CDs before you sold it?  I would suggest returning the DVD5 to its default settings, just n case you have, for instance, disabled the analogue output

I don't know what it did previously as I only played DVDs in it.  I'm pretty sure I must have put a CD in at some stage in its life, but perhaps not (with a CD12 why would you??!!).  I think the guy I sold it to was pretty genuine.  He just returned it to me.  I don't think it's a settings problem as you can see the optical head hunting backwards and forwards when a CD is put in before it gives up.

I could try resetting to default settings if anyone knows how though.

DVD5 Manual, section 7.10.  If you don't have the manual, go to the Naim website > support  > manuals > old equipment.  If all ese fails you could ask Naim themselves for help in solving the problem.

Thanks, got there too with a google search.

It's not economically viable really to get it repaired, so just faffing around to see if anyone has any ideas.  I suspect it's the drive itself, but I can't find a way of testing that theory.  Buying a drive (which sometimes come up on ebay) is most likely a waste of money.  I tried changing the laser head, but that didn't work at all (another dodgy but cheap ebay purchase).
