Asset - Album sorting issue

Posted by: Iver van de Zand on 25 February 2013

Hi Forummembers,

I use Asset as UPnP server running on a wired PC connected to a router and my NAS. Everything works fine; I am using nStream to browse through my collection.

There is one small annoying thing: some albumtitles begin with "The ..." or "A .....", and when I browse on nStream through the Albums folder, I sometimes find the album under T (from "The") or A (from"A") where I prefer to find the album under the "main part" of the album title (difficult not being native English to explain this :-)). I have seen some software in the past where one can automatically ignore leading The's and A's, but cannot find that option in Asset. Does anyone know if the option is there and what I need to do. Of course I can edit the album titles and get rid of the leading The's, but if software could do it, that would be nice.

Another quick question: I'd like to create an overview for nStream listing the latest added albums. Can I do that, and how ?

Cheers,

Iver

Asset supports this kind of sorting (ignore The, A or whatever you want) and I used to did it that way - also that you can sort your albums for artists first and albums second.

After last update n-stream lost to handle that functionality of Asset. You can only use it if you go back to compatible mode without playlists.

Thanks Ernie !!!

How did you handle/implement your solution in Asset itself ?

Hi Iver -

The first option under Edit/General Settings controls how "The" is handled:

"...The Artist & Album Handling  has 3 modes (examples using The Beetles):

  • Smart: this mode keeps the artist text as The Beetles, yet sorts the artist under 'B'

  • Value, The: places the on the end, for example Beetles, The

  • Leave as is: does not adjust the displayed value or sorted position..."

But here's a catch...this only works with nStream if you enable UPnP compatibility mode, otherwise nStream will override what Asset is trying to do, and put everything under "T".

IIRC, it was either Phil or TJ who posted that this behavior was necessary in order to get nStream playlists working. Personally, I would like to be able to ignore the prefix "The", but also have nStream playlists and ultra-fast response time.  Unfortunately, at least for today, we can't have both.

Also, there's nothing for "A" handling in Asset. You could always ask Mr. Spoon in the Asset forum if he has any interest in implementing this. I have not seen an option for "A" handling in any UPnP control point or server products, so the odds of this being implemented in Asset may not be very high.

Good luck!

wow Hook !!!! thanks mate, found it ....

I will try a bit now with the nStream compatibility mode enabling. If i don't like that, I will re-tag the albums starting with "The" and "A"

Hi Iver,

I'm a bit anal when it comes to my naming so I went through and manualy modified all my "A..." and "The..." artists and albums.

n-Stream by default sorts all of it's album lists unless you select the UPnP Compatibility option - this is so we can do the direct access to letters down the side ... otherwise you have to have the dots down the side instead. ;D

Cheers
