Bl**dy Windows 8

Posted by: Dungassin on 28 February 2013

Just trying to get to grips with my new sooper-dooper gaming laptop.  I ordered it from PCSpecialists with Windows 8 Pro.  This was possibly a HUGE mistake.  This must be one of the least intuitive operating systems I have ever seen, and I think I'm going to have to go out tomorrow and buy a manual of some sort to tell me how to work it!  First time ever!

Perhaps it's just culture shock, but I started Internet exploder, clicked on the maximise window button, and after that it wouldn't show me the windows size toggle button.  Took me ages to get it back to a manageable size so that I can usefully have more than one application open - and I STILL don't know how I recovered the error!

Yours, exceedingly grumpy ...

Ironically I am on my third iPhone 5. My first refused to activate. There was a know. batch of devices with MAC codes starting with the same three digits that this problem and sure enough mine matched. Second one got stuck in headphone mode. Again, it's a known problem and although Apple replaced it without question, I has already found it was part of a batch with that problem. Ditto those with wi-fi issues and so on. It's worth checking out. Third iPhone 5 has already pulled the random switch off trick but is otherwise fine so far. As you can see, I've little problem typing on it

You may well be right.  I've searched for similar reported problems, and this sort of behaviour seems to happen with recent versions of Safari on Macbooks etc.  Think I'll drop Apple a line and see what they say.

Hard skin can cause problems. My thumbs suffer a bit that way at the edges and I have to make sure I use the softer middle bits. If I don't I get ignored.

i own both, and if you dig deep enough, windows vista, 7 and now 8 are just basically reworked versions of windows XP. Even samsung said the same yesterday, that Windows 8 is no better than windows vista (it's there on mashable.com). And we all know that vista was not great.

windows PC's have a habit of slowing down over time.

my mac doesn't ever slow down, even when the hard drive is completely full

try to use puppy linux or Ubuntu over any old windows PC, and you might come to see that windows is a bloated software that needs serious simplification to become palatable again

there was no need for windows anyway, had the UNIX crowd produced a unified software with nice GUI. Which is what basically OS X is.

I've never been convinced  by the 'Mac is better' advocates.  More expensive - YES.   Still hanker after my now defunct Acorn RiscC, but I know the current versions are not a match for my new laptop.

There are few performance or reliability issues with Mac or PC nowadays and little difference as to what's on the inside of them. There was always an element of myth. Absolutely so nowadays. Fundamental issues that separate the two are that Mac users tend to use for a single purpose and OSX defrags automatically whereas W8 does not. The defrag accounts for some of the speed issue whilst the rest of the difference comes from Windows users tending to add peripherals in a way Mac users do not and using security software in a way Mac users should but stupidly don't. The comparison of Vista to XP is nonsense. XP was rewritten in key places and has improved security and utter stability. 7 improves on that again. It is vastly superior to OSX in many ways under the bonnet and in terms of usability and accessibility. An OS as an incremental improvement on the previous OS as a criticism is just odd. What else would you want exactly?
