24 bit stereo tracks on DVD's

Posted by: Renzo on 02 March 2013

Hello,

With a view to shortly moving over to a streaming based system I've already put all my CD's onto a hard drive in FLAC format using dbpoweramp

I have some 24 bit stereo mixes on DVDA's and was wondering if it's possible to transfer these to FLAC.

Worth knowing because eventually I might look out for 24 bit versions of remastered material like the Steve Wilson / Porcupine Tree stuff as opposed to the standard CD's.

Thanks,

Renz

DVD Audio Extractor (google it) can rip those for you.

Great thanks for the quick reply Aleg.

Now for my next stupid question. If I rip it to FLAC can I play it on anything that reads FLAC or does it have to be a player that reads 24 bit?

Aleg Is partly right.

DVD AUDIO Extractor works, but not every time. It worked for me on the new Steven Wilson album but not the first ELP album, even though they were both mixed by SW.

I'm told that other apps. might work, I don't know which ones or where to safely download them. I presume I'm in good company, based on the response to my earlier thread :-/

That's funny, DVD Audio Extractor works fine on all my DVD-A copies, including the SW-mastered Tarkus. It's an excellent program IMO. If you've a paid-for copy you get regular updates.

If you want to play the rips at 24-bit you'll need a DAC capable of handling it; if it can only cope with 16 bits (unusual these days) you'll get no sound.

Ah, thanks Tony,

I have the free trial but I downloaded it on Thursday so it should be up to date. I guess I could pay for it but the free trial hasn't gone that well. When I load the DVD the 2 channel file is unticked and when I tick it and re-scan it unticks again :-(

A colleague of mine warned me before I tried it that it doesn't always work. He has a home recording studio and expensive professional ripping software, as well as various cheapos and he tells me that he has never been able to rip the 24 bit files on the Ziggy Stardust reissue.

For those who can find it there is also the DVD Audio Explorer  somewhere 'out there'. That's an old freeware program that also can extract audio from DVD-A discs.

But I must say I never had any problems with DVD Audio Extractor on any of my  discs either.

Blu-Ray Audio. Has anyone had success here ripping these discs? What BR player did anyone use and ripping software?

DVD Audio Extractor has been 100% successful for me, no real issues.

Starting from version 7 of DVD Audio Extractor:

DVD Audio Extractor now supports Blu-ray discs

Thanks for the replies, they've been very helpful.

Last June, Tonym commented that DVDAudio Extractor sometimes doesn't recognise two channel and wouldn't rip Pet Sounds in mono, so at least it isn't victimising only me :-)

Getting the same issue with Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dreams.

Aleg is right as it can be done with DVDAudio Extractor, but only be creating a two channel rip from the six channel file on the DVD and I don't see much point in that. Either that or I'm misinterpreting the software (presumably, the box in the bottom left should not say MLP (48khz 24 bit 6Ch)?).

All my DVD-A and Blu-Ray Audio have both 5.1 and 2.0 versions on them.

Keith

we were talking about 2 channel rips up till now.

what format are you trying to rip your multi channel to?

Is multi channel supported in that format?

try to use another supported multi channel format instead like PCM WAV.

Hi Aleg,

The source DVD has 2 and 6 channel files. I want to rip the 2 channel file to 2 channel FLAC. The problem is that the bottom left box (where you select audio stream) only gives the option of choosing the 6 channel file. I can down mix to stereo in a latter screen but I that's obviously not much use. Am I misinterpreting the software or is it getting confused by the presence of two options?

is there in the top left Window not another chapter you can select that might contain the 2 channel music?

normally 2 and 6 channel versions would be in seperate chapters.

This is often the case. TBH it's not user friendly at times but I have been able to eventually find the stereo mix by sometimes blundering about in DVD-AE. Other times it's all very easy. The only exception so far being Wish You Were Here, which would not give up Track 1 no matter what I did. The DVD-A disc was in such a poor condition (bad packaging) that I ended up wiping everything off and sending it back for a refund.

Hi Harry,

Thanks. Yes, it' s not giving me the required chapter titles in the top left so I'm blundering around in the FAQs on the developer's website. It appears that the file structure of the DVD can fox the app. So now, I'm trying to find the elusive file, but being distracted by events in north London!

Thanks all for your help.

Try to google for "dvd audio explorer download" on videohelp. It is freeware and see if that one can read the dvd structure properly. It has got a more basic interface but also does work well, but only on DVD-A discs

Since solved, presumably by DVD A E update.

Hi chaps,

i've cracked it!

By default, it looks for files in the audio of folders, but some music files lurk in the video folders. I had to point the app at the latter that did the trick.

Thanks again for your help :-)

Recently ripped the Rolling Stones Grrr 24 bit blu ray audio using DVD AE, without any problems. Sounds far better than any previous 16 bit compilation I have. Also half the price of the Linn 24 bit download.

Also ripped Pink Floyd Immersion blu rays and Neil Young DVDs, all in 24 bit.

Just checked the DR database and it looks like the GRRR BD and download are the same masters. In fact, the BD is theoretically better as it is 24/96 and the download is a measly 24/88.2 :-0

Could be the 88.2 is better than the 96 if the digital master has been a DSD or DXD.
