Steve Reich's new piece, Radio Rewrite, is being premièred this week by the London Sinfonietta, at the RFH on the 5th, followed by Birmingham Town Hall on the 6th, Brighton Dome on the 7th and Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall on the 9th.
I only realised this yesterday, but amazingly there were still a few tickets for Brighton left. So on Thursday night Hilary and I will be there. I love Reich's music yet have never seen it played live, so I'm very excited. It's weird, at 52 looking forward to a concert as much as when I was 18 booking tickets for Joy Division, or booking The Smiths when I was 22. Times change, bits of you work less well, but the excitement of new music seems undimmed. Which must be good!!

I'm not really familiar to Reich's music but I liked very much what I had the chance to hear. I missed the last performance of his music around here last year and still have regrets.
Lucky man, Milord, lucky man.

From the number of responses not many seem to be very interested in Steve Reich, but I thought I'd report back that it was a fantastic night, with the opening performance of Clapping being performed by the man himself. The new Radio Rewrite was excellent. Steve returned to the stage at the end to thank the performers and take a bow, and the audience response was amazing, with a real feeling of warmth. The concert on the 5th at the RFH can be heard on iPlayer for a few more days; worth a listen.

BBC4 has been showing a three part series on twentieth century classical music called "The Sound and the Fury". It deals with the journey into avant garde, serialism and the return of listenable music. Steve Reich is interviewed in the final episode. Very interesting and entertaining and worth checking out if it's still on iPlayer.
