Buffering issue for 192 khz (Unitilite)WD My Book Live 1TB Personal Cloud

Posted by: Philippe Clot on 05 March 2013

My configuration:

Everything is ok with 96Hz FLAC files. But with 192kHz files, the music stops after around 30 seconds, 1 minute. And the buffer display go back  to 90%, the music starts again and and so on. I know that this buffering issue is wellknown. But if anybody gets a miraculous solution... Welcome!

(sorry for my awful written english)

Are you using a wired or wireless connection to the UnitiLite?

I am unable to stream 24/192 files to my ND5 XS using a wireless network connection. I have to use an ethernet connection between the ND5 and my router, which in turn has an ethernet connection my the computer serving the files via UPnP. When I tried it wirelessly, 24/96 worked, but I got constant dropouts with 24/192.

Philippe, you need to use a good quality gigabit switch to connect your Unitilite and My Book. If you are using a regular router from your ISP this will often give these problems.. as will a cheaper switch !

I have experienced what you describe with a Netgear GS605 switch, then changing to a TP-Link SG100 switch, all the problems disappeared.  They are available on Amazon and priced very reasonably.

(PS - IT stuff is what I do, so I'm talking from practical experience)

Hi RT,

Only a Wireless connection. With this WD, it's the only way.

But with a USB Key plugged in the front of the Unilite, the FLAC 192kHz files run without problem.

I am using a 100Mb Apple Airport Extreme, and that works just fine, as long as I connect both my Mac and ND5 via ethernet and not wireless.

That was my point. I am unable to stream 24/192 files using a wireless connection. I had to change to a wired ethernet connection (using Cat6 cable).

Thank you Rjstaines,

Actually, I should ask my ISP for a brand new modem for my cable connection, isn'it?

No, your cable modem is not the issue.

I think you didn't get my point before. It's simple, you can't stream 24/192 over a wireless connection to your UnitiLite. That works for 24/96, but your WiFi (wireless) connection is not handling the bandwidth of 24/192.

If you want 24/192 to work, you need to change from wireless streaming on your network to wired (ethernet). I had the same problem as you and changing from a wireless to an ethernet connection on my ND5 XS was the only solution.

Thank you all,

So, I will use a memory stick for the 192 mHz FLAC files. Bye bye to the convenient wifi streaming...

This issue is the only small defect of this brand new Unitilite. Otherwise, I am delighted especially by its perfect complementarity with the Jean-Marie Reynaud Cantabile Supreme.

Wish you the best

It's not a defect of your Unitilite - it's a defect of your wireless network. Searching this forum will turn up plenty of ideas on how to improve this.

had exactely the same issue – able to stream 24/96 via Wifi but often losing connection at 24/192. Wired (with a wire all across the room) was OK. I took a test using a "PowerLine" offered by my companies like D-Link, Netgear & Co.

In general: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_line_communication

Works like a charm for me – 24/192 with no issues for several weeks now. I'm able to get CONSTANT 280-300 mbit/sec thru several walls spanning quite some distance. Will not go back to Wifi at all for this.

Might be worth a try for you as well...

Thanks Lorenz,

I will try with a Devolo system.

I disagree.  I have ZERO problems streaming 24-192 via wifi.  Although I do now have it wired.  I use a top of their line Net Gear rangemax router ($130).  No drops.

Maybe this is due to the pre-buffering and "play from memory" with JRiver on my HTPC that I play back on (serving from JRiver in the other room).
