Losing Unitiserve Connection
Posted by: Timbo on 11 March 2013
I've noticed that I keep losing my Unitiserve SSD connection on my Ipad and Iphone since the recent update of NServe. Does anyone else have this problem.
Once I have a play queue going I usually close the cover of my iPad and let the music play. However I've noticed that when i am looking through the music catalog or monitoring the ripping of a CD the connection to the Unitiserve is lost for a few seconds, displays discovering and reconnects. It does this roughly every 7 to 12 minutes.
The wifi signal is strong and nothing else is losing a connection, also the Userve app or web page is rock solid from a PC or Mac even if they are connected to the wireless network. So I'm thinking it must be the ipad/iphone app.

What bit rate are you running? I notice mine only cuts out in 24/192 material but 24/96 runs fine. Make sure you have a good router. I use to have trouble with a cheap router then changed to an apple extreme and hardly ever have a cut out.

Tim do you ever try to use both the iPad and the iPhone to be connected at the same time, or close to the same time? That totally confuses the uServe and will cause this behaviour. Believe me -- I found this out myself from experience

Devon - Doesn't matter what the bitrate is, things will play, I just lose the connection from iPad/iphone.
Bart - good thinking, I have NServe on my iPhone but don't really use it so will delete that version and see what happens.

Not wanting to confuse the issue for unitiserve, but I ave the HDX and use ith iPad and iPhone to connect, never had any issue with confusing the system, all seems to work well

You could be right Cbr600. The iPad still keeps losing the connection to the Unitiserve. I wonder if it is the latest IOS version or the latest (2.5) Nserve version. Wireless on anything is is solid.

Well I have done some experiments. I deleted the NServe from my Iphone and continued with the iPad, but still connections problems.
Next i deleted the app from my ipad and rebooted and reinstalled, I got version 2.4 and that has been solid, no connection problems at all. The app store is asking me to upgrade to version 2.5, but I will hold off until I contact Naim support.

Good to hear you have stability again, well done.
I have been using 2.5 since its release and no issues at all with it

Timbo, i am having the same problems since the update came round. I will delete the apps from my Iphone and reinstall the 2.4 version.

Tombo, although I think Naim have changed their code to make more robust, but Airplay and upnp use a discovery technique that uses a special set TCP/IP packets called multicast packets. These need to be handled in a specific way according to its appropriate standard. Some cheap (and not so cheap) consumer Internet routers and wireless access points don't respect multicast. If that happens your devices will probably lose contact with each other.
I use an Apple Airport Express plugged into a Netgear and Cisco switches. I have no problem with Multicast, but I did previously.
