+1 - although the double bass on the first track will find out if you have any bass issues in your environment. Brilliant album.

David, have a look at this thread. Jazz, like Rock and Pop is a very broad church and this thread will take you in a different and IMHO very rewarding direction - a lot of different music to that presented here so far - not so much the older jazz but rather the newer and often European variety.

Mose Allison, another one of my favourites, always puts a smile on my face.

Almost makes me want to start a Mose Allison thread!

Any recommendations for his best few (as there are many)?

I was thinking of copying the words to "I don't worry about a thing" in the best lyrics thread.

In a more actual way:

Voice: Holly Cole (Don't smoke in bed)

Quartet: Chick Corea (Time Warp), Winton Marsalis (Magic Hour), John Scofield (steady groovin')

Band: Pat Metheney (Offramp)

+1 Brad Mehldau (Highway Rider)

Yaron Herman, Tigran Hamasyan trio.

All of those aren't to rough for a first listening.

Jazz today is very large and what a wonderful world.

As David mentioned Jazz Funk, maybe it's worth to try my approach to Miles Davis. I like Soul and Funk very much. Therefore I love the great bassist Marcus Miller. The Album "Tutu" was for me the beginning to go deeper into Jazz and Miles Davis.

Tutu is very good, and Amandla, its followup, is even better ... probably my favorite latter period Miles.

+1  on Marcus Miller.   Very cool.   Check out "Tales".  I think he recorded it in his home studio playing every instrument and sampling the vocals.   Nice work if you can get it.

Marcus Miller played quite a bit with David Sanborn as well. These are in the same adult contemporary or "smooth jazz" territory as Tutu:

I've always liked Swing and Jazz in old movies.  When I started collecting Jazz about 8 years ago with new TT I focused on the early greats Ella, Nat, Sarah and avoiding the edgier 50s/60s.  Now I have a number of those tho don't play them often like I do Ella, she just has a big heart and wonderful phrasing/voice.  Her Songbooks are wonderful intro to each of the composers which has helped me delineate who is whom.  I also listen to 40s on 4 Sirius radio in the car.

Check out some Ken Vandermark...the coolest player of the last ten years IMO.

Absolutely ... why not? Except maybe for her current album, Glad Rag Doll, which explores other genres and is not jazz by intention.

Yep, I'd agree. She's definitely a jazz singer and pianist; and a class act. Her popularity actuality seems to count against her in some circles though. Her husband is a better songwriter. (She's also our neighbour - more or less).

We saw the Glad Rag Doll tour here in Vancouver. It was great.

hmmm, dianna krall jazz?!?

That's a funny question.

What is the definition of Jazz?

Kurt Vonnegut said;"that never the same way twice music called Jazz.''

 and to me that's it.

Here are 2 links with my 3 favorite Jazz singers of the moment;

Cassandra Wilson,Carmen Gomes and Dianne Reeves ,

singing Bruce Springsteen and The Beatles,

is that Jazz?

I will second the reply who said "Spotify" as the one word answer to your question!

Treat the "related artists" button as your best friend and prepare to spend a LOT of hours on a voyage of discovery :-)

Also, check out the "apps" section of Spotify - there is a Blue Note app - musical heaven.....enjoy!

I am also very partial to Scandinavian jazz, and have recently discovered the Polish scene....it goes on for ever discovering wonderful music.

Cheers,
