Plex - as a UPnP / DLNA Server

As a long time fan of Plex I have started experimenting with its abilities as a music server. So far the results have been impressive and very promising.

At present all my bluray and DVD needs are handled by a MacMini Plex server attached to my main screen and streaming to multiple IOS devices around the household - even beyond using PlexWeb. The quality is superb, media management is web based and tagging is handled by a seperate Plex database.

The recent rapid development programme means that its abilities to stream music have also improved rapidly to the point where it can stream flac very nicely to my Uniti. Cover art is handled by Plex and operation is quick and painless.

I'm sure there are drawbacks but so far it looks promising and could mean a solid reliable Mac based solution.

I recently moved to plex having got a samsung smart tv which runs a client. The server is run directly from OpenMediaVault on a proliant.

I am happy with its capabilities in terms of getting film/tv/music on the road and around the house on all devices.

However as is typical in my experience with plex, they spend far to much time on the implimentation and not nearly enough on quality. Video audio is always out of sync, and constant stutters and slow down of video is typical.

Music files, although well tagged are only picked up 50% of the time, fixing the non picked up ones is tedious and slow.

I just wish they would stop progressing development for one minute and fix the issues, because as a whole package it has so much potential

Hi Gary - I would agree they sometimes move too quickly. I too have a Samsung TV but gave up on the client app for streaming as the quality left something to be desired. I now play direct from the MacMini and so far haven't had any more issues with sync. The stream to IOS devices has usually been good and recent updates have stopped the distorion issues with some transcoded mkv DTS movie soundtracks.

The flac stream seems fine But vortexbox / bliss still remains my software of choice for a large music store.

How stable do you find the openmediavault?

Not a huge plex fan... Fine on a local network, not so much for a remote network.

i use Servio for my SU... Works perfectly.
