A MUST HAVE (for me anyway)

Due out next Tuesday:

Such a great, great guitarist - how many people could have a 7 disc set body of work when they died at age 24?

" Duane Allman was one of the defining musicians of our era, rated second only to Jimi Hendrix in Rolling Stone's list of rock's 100 greatest guitarists. A founding member, with his brother Gregg, of the Allman Brothers Band, Duane was also active as a session musician, and as a member of the all-star Derek and the Dominos. This seven CD set, produced by Duane's daughter Galadrielle Allman and esteemed reissue producer Bill Levenson, shows the full breadth and depth of Duane's work, from early recordings (with Gregg) in bands such as The Escorts, Allman Joys and Hour Glass; to his studio work with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, Delaney & Bonnie, Ronnie Hawkins and many others; to a live jam session with the Grateful Dead. The set includes several unreleased performances, many classic Allman Brothers songs, and a collector's cache of rare singles and long out-of-print album tracks. Also included are a 72 page book with essays by Scott Schindler and Galadrielle Allman, many rare photographs, a replica of Duane's guitar pick, and a Skydog sticker. Numbered, limited edition of 10,000. "

This seems interesting indeed. The seven disc set might be a little bit too much for me though. I noticed that there are also available two CDs named Allman, Duane: Anthology Vol.1 & Vol. 2. (released already quite awhile ago). Do you happen to know if these are any good?

Looking through that track listing I'd say that's lovely packaging but there's maybe 2 albums worth of material worth listening to at best.

Here in the States, on National Public Radio's "Weekend Edition" on Saturday March 16, they interviewed Galadrielle Allman and she talked about her father's music and this project.

Hopefully this link works:

Just read the write up on Amazon. com and listened to the interview from Bart's link.

I'm beginning to become a little cynical about this release .

How does a girl 2 years old when her father died hope to have an insight into her fathers musings, as she portrays, other than that gleaned from other peoples comments.

The package seems quite expensive even for a 7 CD limited release,

Is she cashing in on her father's reputation? I hope not.

The proof is in the content.

I would say the record company is cashing in, using the daughter as a marketing vehicle.

Yes; I have both - they give a cut or 2 from the albums on which he played (Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, etc.) while doing session work down at Muscle Shoals.  They also have some ABB cuts, which for me, are the least compelling cuts on the discs, not because the music isn't great (because in fact it was the best stuff he did) but because most of them are on other ABB albums already...and ABB music was at its best live.

And the NPR piece was exactly how I found out about it.  I think he is a seriously underrated guitarist...

Thanks DrMark. The info you gave is appreciated. I have a couple of ABB albums but I think I might add some Duane Allman in my next CD purchase order.

Just been checking out the box set on Amazon.

$117.49 in USA

£184.57 in UK

How does that work!

Maybe because it's sold by Amazon in the USA, but an independent in the UK.

Is someone cashing in. Wonder why Amazon aren't selling it in the UK.

Has anyone purchased it and what are your views on VFM or content.

Purchased from Allman Bros. website for $100 iirc. Not much new but sound quality and presentation good. Seems to have been selling like hot cakes which MIT explain the European pricing. Is still not available in Germany or only via resellers at even more mark up.

Got a reminder from Amazon UK yesterday about the box set.

Available for £96.14 from Amazon (cheapest price in the list of sellers). 4 in stock at the time.

Previewed some of the tracks and liked the variation in styles and guest artists.

I only have the " Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East" cd so decided to take a punt.

Just checked on Amazon UK ; only one seller at £194.89!
