New Owner Of Naim HDX
Posted by: Robko on 20 March 2013
Hi All,
I just received my Naim HDX yesterday. After spending a day with the unit here are my thoughts so far..
Pros:
1. Great Sound Quality
2. Ease of Use
3. Finally room for all of my CDs in lossless
Cons:
1. N-Serve is a little Wonky. Still needs alot of work in terms of tagging options and speed
2. Display on unit not very crisp
3. The most irritating feature is that multiple CD sets appears as CD1, CD2, etc. Playing Quadrophenia , The White Album or Something/Anything in two parts is brutal. They are complete albums and should not be separated in any way! N-Serve will not allow you combine tracks. Any suggestions or a confirmation from Phil that this issue will be addressed in later software updates would be greatly appreciated!
Look for my future posts on the adventure of HDX.
Hi Robco and welcome to the HDX group.
I have been using mine for a few years now and love it, a great piece of kit.
In terms of he screen, why not try cleaning it, this may help, follow the internal instructions to get to this through the file structure.mi have never had an issue ith screen clarity.
On the speed issue, what is your concern as again never been slow in my use.
What model do you have?
In terms of the 2 part albums i think this can be addressed using the DTC

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your reply. I will try cleaning the screen. What do you use?
My model is the 2TB version with the latest updates. I tried using n stream to change the title of CD in order to combine tracks. I keep getting an permission error message. I also tried doing this both my iMac and Windows laptop. Is there something that I might be doing wrong? Is it possible to change the permissions?
I'm interested in your experience to date.
Thanks, Rob
Hi Robco,
Being able to merge multiple CDs into one is not something that we intend to add to the servers - if you wish to do this then why not create a playlist?
Never had anyone complain of the screen not being very crisp before ... at the risk of causing offence, you have removed the protective film that is placed over the front panel for shipping haven't you? It should have a sticker on it and be pretty obvious but we have had people miss it before.
Otherwise - if you can get me a cameraphone shot showing the display to illustrate the problem and mail it to me at phil.harris@naimnet.com then I'll take a look for you.
Cheers
Phil
Robko / Phil,
when i spoke of cleaning the screen, i was referring to the system cleaning the screen.
I thought the HDX pull down menus had a section for "degaussing" the screen, ie cleaning it internally?
will have a look at the manul this evening and check this again

Hi - there's no "internal screen cleaning" or degaussing (not relevant on LCD displays) ... there's a screen cleaning mode that removes all the buttons so that you can clean the screen with a cloth without randomly accessing menus though...

thanks phil, thought i had seen something about it.
and in terms of hand cleaning the screen, the HDX comes supplied with a cloth for the purpose, so best to use that
Hi Robko / Phil,
Can I just agree that I find having multiple entries for certain albums to be a pain, but not all.
Most double albums I prefer to have as a single entry. Compilations I am happy to have individually.
My solution is to copy the ripped double album from the store to a share, and then move all the files into a single directory.
Of course this then leads me to one thing I hope Naim allow soon, and I have mentioned previously - give us the ability to assign a genre to an album on a network share.
Be also great to remove the need for the Desktop Client and do everything through a web app.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for your input. I did remove the protective film however it left a residue over the screen. I managed to clean it with a mild soap and water and the screen is alot better now!
I understand that that I can build playlists for multiple discs however i still prefer having the ability of combine multiple sets into one. It certainly looks better when browsing by album. The White Album Disc 1 and The White Album Disc 2 is really "The White Album" (technically I know its called The Beatles). I really hope that naim will ponder the thought some more about the user having the ability of merging tracks. This would definitely help in managing compilation albums.
Thanks, Rob
Hi Rob,
I too often want multi-cd sets to appear as one cd, and the way that my UnitiServe rips (like your HDX) is not compatible with this. For some reason, The White Album is one where I am happy to keep it as 2 cd's, as it reminds me of the lp and I often chose to play only one of the two.
The best solution for now is to rip such cd sets with a computer, tag them as one cd, and then put them into the Downloads folder (share) on the HDX. You have full control over how to tag files not ripped by the HDX, but this way can still get them into your music library.
I take it you mean the DeskTop Client? It can be a little finicky renaming things, eg you have to rename the artist from the album dropdown (if you are trying to name an unknown album). If you are getting permission errors, that could be your network/router settings. Unfotunately every situation is different so its hard to diagnose remotely.
I prefer to keep single CDs from a double or set as single CDs. I suppose it goes back to how I am wired between the ears, having been used to handling each CD separately and vinyl before that. I just call them disk 1 or 2 or etc. As has already been gone into, play lists and ripping/tagging/placing are so easy to do that this perceived limitation of the HDX doesn't matter much to me. I have The Stones London Years in 24/192 which came as a complete package. I find the toilet roll list of tracks rather too long. I would prefer to arrange them into the format of the 3 CDs on which the set originally released. Haven't got around to doing this yet. When I do, I'll create three play lists.
