What, where and why:

A wild guess at the first 2 - An Aeroplane, in a field?

Camouflage target practice?

Tony,

Not a plane expert, so no idea what or where. But as for the why, it looks like the plane  that has been used in some films / video, such as the plane that disintegrates in the bond movie, or a video for HP computers along the same vein.

Look forward to reading the guesses though

Just another thought, could it be on a current airfield and used for fire training?

Posted on: 25 March 2013 by Tony Lockhart
Obviously it's a decaying aircraft. But its location and reason are interesting. Well, to me they are!
Posted on: 25 March 2013 by JamieWednesday

Well it's a Shackleton

The light is not UK light I think.  Looks like Egypt or similar?

Posted on: 25 March 2013 by GraemeH

Looks like the remains of Shackleton MR.3 XF700 at Nicosia.

Images on flickr suggest you may be correct on the what and where.

What about the why?

Posted on: 25 March 2013 by Tony Lockhart
Well done George!

An almost retired RAF Shackleton MR.3 (XF700) was flown to Nicosia in the early 1970s for use as a fire dump trainer.

She was parked ready for training use when the Turkish invasion occurred.

Its tail sections have fallen off and a tree is growing through her.

Info, but no real reason "why"

I'll ask one of my mates who flew Lightnings and was based in Cyprus for a while in the early 70's if he knows "why"

Cheers

Don

I think that's enough. Between George and

.... Don, that's all the info needed. It's in the buffer zone between the Turkish and Greek sides, so can't be moved. It's stuck till some adults sort out their differences.

To speed up your search of images use the "Google Search Image" Plugin for your browser.

It is quite interesting using it to search for other users of your own images

much more fun if you just try and think of an answer rather than the google cheat !

that being said, i did not know you could do an image search in google, thanks for the tip
