"How to" NAS it up...
Posted by: Thorsten_L on 28 March 2013
Hi@all!
I own a ND5XS and right now I stream my music via my office PC (ASSET) over PowerLine-adapters into my living room and then via ethernet LAN-cable to my ND5XS (see pics).
I have a WLAN setup in my office and I can smoothly navigate with my Ipod Touch n-stream.
Everything is running perfect, except that I have to have my QuadCore PC running...
If I would now buy a SYNOLOGY DS 112+, how would I integrate this NAS...???
If I would start now, I would
1) buy a the 112+
2) buy an ethernet switch
3) set up the NAS
4) put the switch on my PowerLIne- Internet in my living room
5) put both the NAS and the ND5XS into the free ports on the switch...(I want the NAS in my living room)
Would this work?
Could I still navigate with my Ipod Touch N-stream app?
Thorsten, you should be quite happy with the Synology nas. I have a 212J, with 2 2tb hard drives in a raid setup, but one drive should be fine. Just be sure to back it up to an external usb drive using their built-in utility.
Yes you can connect the nas and the ND5XS via a switch to the rest of your network. However I go the other way -- only my NDS is in my living room. The nas and other 'stuff' is several rooms away. All of that 'stuff' is connected together thru a switch, and then one ethernet cable runs from the switch, through the walls, to the room with the NDS. I like having the nas and other stuff out of the hi fi room.
Yes, I suppose this would work.
Am I right in assuming that the router sending the wifi signal is located in your office and that this signal extends into your living room?
If this is so, you could spare the powerline and switch altogether and simply stream via your wifi. Plus you could locate the NAS in your office and wire it directly to the router (i.e. the switch in your router). The problem with NASs is that they mostly have a fan for cooling purposes and that ths may be a little disturbing in the living room. Not necessarily while listening to music, but when everything is quiet in the room and you're having diner or just want to take a nap on the couch.
Even if you want your streamer to be wired to the powerline, you could still put the NAS in the office.

I tried everything via WLAN, but my Superline/Turntable-setup picks up some WLAN noises...and I really would like to keep my ND5XS "wired".
So, the PowerLine cable goes to the "Internet" port on the switch (since the Powerline is connected to my router) and the NAS and the ND5XS go into the free LAN-ports, right?
Or I change my 5-port ASUS switch in my office (connected to my router) to a 8-port switch and integrate the NAS there...
Lets see how loud the NAS comes around.
Thank you.
Hi Musiclover,
The approach that you are describing is correct. It should work that way. In terms of a switch, I could recommend the Netgear switches: cheap and reliable.
WHen purchasing the NAS, I would definately ask the dealer to have the UpnP sotware (i.e. Twonky) pre-installed.

Synology nas will come pre-configured to run their Media Server, which in my experience works OK to serve to a Naim streamer.
@all
Thanks...
One thing:
Instead of the NAS, I could also "integrate" a UnitiServe (2TB) that way with the Powerline/Switch configuration, right?
Sure. But that would mean unnecessary spending of money and in the end less control over your files and tagging.

You certainly could, but if you are comfortable already ripping cd's on the computer, as the Ham(p)ster said, it would be more expensive and not really give you a tangible benefit.

Bart, you're actually not the first one to correct (in a very nice way) my spelling. But I'm afraid you native speakers might be on the wrong track. I don't think that there is such a word as 'hampster'.

I think you're right -- HamPster may well be common but wrong!
So...Syn 112+ (2 TB WD RED) up and running!!!
Wonderful.
Another happy NASer!
Enjoy it.

So everyone interested in buying a NAS...
This Synology 112+ works like a dream...
Software is fantastic.
Sound is awesome.
Quiet like in "STILLNESS".
So...Syn 112+ (2 TB WD RED) up and running!!!
Wonderful.
Happy your Synology 112+ working well for you I feel that Netgear, Qnap & Synology all work well with Naim n-Stream
It is nice to be able to play internet radio (vtuner ) or stream cd files from NAS and not need computer in your stereo rack.

I have actually just yesterday expatriated my router and NAS from the lounge to a corner behind the wardrobe in the dressing room. My SBT was previously wired up to the router, now it is all wifi operated. I have restrained myself to 48/24 max. resolution for streaming anyway because of other wifi streamers around the house. And it works beautifully.
I`m a stupido in NAS understanding. Cause of that I have considered a UServe SSD, but curious to find out without the outlay.
I have set up my Synology 212J and my Mac find it in the network. I`m not able so access it though and obviously thats because I haven`t set up the software yet. What function in the Synology software to use (or download) for contact between NAS and Mac?
Next, I have purchased a Unitiqute for the livingroom and want that one to find the NAS as well. What to do and do I have to run my Mac then all the time, when using the Qute?
Arrest me if I`m hijacking this thread, not mean to.
Thanks.

You need to download and install via PACKAGE-centre the "MEDIASERVER".
You have DSM 4.2 already installed?
This would be step 1.
Then find package "MEDIASERVER".

As to what's in bold -- no, you need the nas running all the time, but not the Mac. The needed network connection is between the Qute and the server (your nas). The benefit of using a nas as a server is that your computers are not involved at all in the playback of music. You'll just use the Mac to add music to the nas, and administer it.
Took some time to return to topic. Thanks MusicLover and Bart. This was very helpful.
I updated DSM4.0 to 4.2.
Downloaded mediaserver and set up a music folder. I have rip`d the first cd and it seems to work just fine.
I use iTunes for ripping and replay, just as earlier when using USB disc. Set to rip AIFF, but not sure what format to go for yet. Think NDS will be my source within a year or so and Qute as streamer two. By the way, dealer sent UnitiLite by mistake, unpacked in the hall so far.
Any more comments on the above?
Best Steinar
Hi Steinar,
I've got the NDS as my source on my main system, and the Qute for system #2 as well. You can serve your music to both of those with the Synology nas just fine.
Nothing wrong with ripping to AIFF, especially if you're using iTunes to do the rips. You could also use Max to rip on a Mac, but if you're happy ripping to the AIFF format I see no need.
Just be sure to backup your nas to an external usb drive.
Cheers,
Bart
I`m not at the end when it comes to formats Bart. I see people use original formats and lossless as FLAC and ALAC, also converting "on the fly". At least I have got my NAS to work and speak with the network.
Another question. I had the whole Living Stereo box set on a HDD and dragged it into the Synology Music folder last night. The music is not visible in iTunes. I find it in the Synology folder and starts playing it from there. Music starts playing in iTunes and becomes visible there, but then the track file disappear in the Synology folder. Cannot find it on the Mac disk either, still it`s playing?
Any help to get files that are draged into the NAS to be visible in iTunes automatically?
