The Food Standards Agency & Hygiene awards

Posted by: mista h on 31 March 2013

The above agency are now inspecting all food premises, this includes pubs, restaurants, cafes, coffee shops etc etc. Once inspected they are given a GREEN sticker to display in their window with their rating on.....0 being the lowest and 5 being the highest award for hygiene standards

I have been watching this and sadly it is NOT compulsory for any establishment to display their sticker.

As a result almost all places with a poor rating IE 0 1 2 do not display their sticker and places with a good rating IE  3 4 or 5 do. We(thats me and the boss) wont now eat in any place not showing their award sticker or that has less than a 3 star rating.

You can check your local eatery on the FSA website.

I work for catering establishment that has a a 5 star hygiene award and the standards set to achieve this are indeed high, to achieve this standard you have to have hazard analysis systems in place, keep temperature records, cleaning schedules. The premises must reach very high standards food storage and preparation including colour coded knifes and boards are used in individual areas to avoid cross contamination. All staff have a valid hygiene certificate and regular hygiene training.

It should in my opinion be compulsory for all food outlets to display their "Green stickers". In the meantime I agree it's best to avoid those eateries which don't display them.

I'm sure the system encourages improved hygiene standards, because a lot of people wouldn't eat in a 1 or 2 rated establishment.  I checked my local eateries a couple of years ago, but to be honest soon forgot the gradings and eat where the food is more to my liking.

When I think back, my grandfather used to cook chips in a pan of lard, and the chippy used to wrap chips in newspaper. These days that would probably score -5.

A very interesting thread. I had a look at some of my local restaurants. Thankfully my fave is 5. There are a couple I've not been to but have thought about going but are a 1 so no way am I going there. I have saved their site on my fave list on my phone and can use this where ever I go. Many thanks, Mike

I wonder how often random spot checks are carried out. And of course there's nothing to stop the good old fashioned greeny being gobbed into you meal by a hacked off cook or waiter.
