Best Albums of All Time!

Posted by: rodwsmith on 01 April 2013

Whatever you thought, you were wrong.

Here they are :

Coldplay Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002)

Keane Hopes and Fears (2004)

Duran Duran Rio (1982)

Pink Floyd The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)

Dido No Angel (1999)

The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers (1971)

The Pet Shop Boys Actually (1987)

The Beatles Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)

U2 The Joshua Tree (1987)

10 Queen A Night At The Opera (1975)

If you don't agree, then suggest you resist listening to Radio 2.

I find it depressing that such musical beige as Coldplay and Keane could feature so high in anyone's top 100 albums.

No doubt everyone here could list list a 100 albums more deserving of a place in  such a list without drawing breath.

Truly depressing.

You do know what day it is today, don't you?

Don't you think it is a tad odd that this is on the Graun's site and not Radio 2's?

Never heard of two of them.

Heard of, but never listened to another two of them.

Heard, but don't really care again to listen to another three of them

The last three are classics and favorites from my youth, but I don't have nor listen to them now.

Not a single one is in my current collection, and isn't likely to be, but I stopped listening to rock in the early 80s anyway.

Maybe there should be top 10 albums for  different genres of music. Depending on your background and what music you were exposed too determines what you find the best.

I dislike heavy metal, rap music but some when dis agree with me

I never of fond of classical but does not mean it was not great music.

I have Pink Floyd re-mastered and Beatles in 24bit flac and yes even though original Beatles recorded in 60s can still sound good. Others on Op list I do not have.

Oh how we love to get sniffy.

This list reflects Radio 2 listeners, not critics, and not Naim Forum contributors. These have all been incredibly popular albums, selling millions of copies. Presumably those who own them continue to enjoy them enough to vote for them. That is frankly success by any measurement.

None float my boat, but I don't listen to R2.

What is the world coming to when Coldplay is number one.

Do you think that deserves some sort of prize?

Or are you now so cool because you "stopped listening to rock music"?

Not that I agree with this list, although as Bruce points out, it's as valid as any other - and possibly more than most - but why does everyone hate Coldplay so much?

Is there really anything objectionable about their musicianship?

Strong melodies, excellent playing (the guitarist is really talented) great production, and I saw them live last year and it was an astonishing concert (for a stadium gig) real verve and spectacle (no wonder they won Live Act of the Year). They're not my favourite band by any stretch, his occasional falsetto singing adds little for me, and I prefer their first album to their second in any case, but I really cannot see where all the vitriol towards them comes from. Seems to be more than a bit of jealousy going on somewhere.

I'd rather have 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' on in the background or while driving than 'OK Computer' which I seem to remember topped the last such poll somewhere or other. You really need to be in the mood for Radiohead, even though it's arguably a more accomplished 'work of art'.

Seems a reasonable enough list to me. Coldplay's not entirely to my taste but I've enjoyed some of their music. If only the CDs sounded better...

It really isn't the done thing to like U2, Coldplay, Queen, Robbie Williams or Duran Duran.

I guess I cannot be cool. According to the OP I MUST agree with the list. Only those you do can be cool.

Oh I was just kidding in response to BigH47's mean-spirited post.

A couple of things I've noticed about this chart. The 100 albums in the chart were chosen by the radio station based on 'most plays' by the station. So all the listeners did was choose the ranking not which albums were in the 100.

Secondly, only one album per artist was allowed, so for example with Dark Side being in the top 100 list already Wish You Were Here was not even eligible. Probably explains why some of the more obscure artists made a showing.

So all a bit meaningless.

Same with me : Not a single one is in my current collection . I used to have Sgt Pepper', but I trashed it years ago.

Probably the best concept album of it's generation.

If you don't agree pick the bones out of this lot.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

One of the few rock albums I have in my collection, and a long time favorite:

IMHO one of the very best rock albums.

That's why it remained in my collection when most everything else disappeared.

Well I own one of those, and don't really care for that much. None of the rest appeal. A rather dated and one-dimensional selection IMHO...

Yes, I'm being deliberately offensive but only to point out the stupidity of all lists of 'The Best' when it comes to art. We can say what is most popular etc but in the end although we might agree on a basic level of quality the final appreciation is personal, and contingent on time and place.

Some of my favourites may not be considered great albums, or indeed appear on anyone else's all-time lists but it does not stop me enjoying them. Each to his or her own.

Bruce

PS Shawshank Redemption-the Coldplay of film? Just a thought. Turner's Fighting Temeraire was voted UK's 'greatest' painting by R4 listeners (with the Hay Wain 2nd) incidentally

Posted on: 03 April 2013 by thebigfredc

Ranked lists usually say more about the person/people who compiled it than the relative merits of the individual items on the list. They are also tied very closely to the time they were compiled. So they are both arbitrary and absurd.

In the case of the IMDB I rather like Shawshank as being at the top. It was a small budget film which didn't even make it to the cinema screen so I can't really see the parallels with Coldplay.

Moreover, how the hell did The Petshop boys make it to number seven!

At least that droning Sex on Fire band whose name I have managed to erase from my memory were not present.

I suspect film buffs are sniffy about Shawshank (the popular choice) much as music buffs denigrate Coldplay.

Although both groups own a copy of each of course!

Popular does not always equal best (whatever that is).

..I would agree with the comments before. Strange selection and even of some of the bands the best album in my opinion is not always selected. There are better top 10's in my opinion.

And of course it's missing jazz and classical albums :-)

I love Coldplay, they are so challenging and inventive. How could anyone not like them?
