NDX temperature
Posted by: Ralph Ho on 07 April 2013
Hi,
I read some discussions on NDX temperature, and it seems most people's NDX temperature is quite low. However, I have the different story.
I use XPS2 to power NDX. Before that, I used the same XPS2 to power CDX2, and the temperature of XPS2 and CDX2 is very low. However, when I linked XPS2 with NDX, I can feel quite warm for both XPS2 and CDX2. The voltage at my home is 115V and the ambient is around 25C. I notice NDX consuming more power than CDX2 (45 watts VS 15 watts, read from PS Audio P5). Does anyone have similar experience?
PS: Due to space constraint, I have no choice but pile NDX above XPS2.

This is from Naim FAQ which you may find useful:
Most product will run at up to 42 degrees Celsius.
To view the current operating temperature of our streaming products with a display, press "List" and look under "System Settings" -> "Factory Settings" -> "System Status".

Ralph, the NDX should run warmer than the CDX2. This is because of the streamer section which is a bit like a mini computer dedicated to task. Just like a computer there are a lot of chips and they run warm. The outer casing acts as a heatsink, hence it will feel warm. If stacked right on top of the XPS2 then that will also get warm. Best would be to try to get some space between them, at the very least on separate sheves.

Are you using the wireless network to stream music? If you use the wired Ethernet connection the NDX temperature will drop significantly.

Hi Peter,
I couldn't check operating temperature under System Status. Maybe because I am using 3.13 firmware.
Hi Richard,
Thanks for suggestion. I really need to find some space for NDX.
Hi roo,
I am using Ethernet as suggested by Naim.

Ralph, I just happened to be browsing the FAQ when I saw your post, so I copied what Naim said for your reference. A moment ago I tried to check the temperature of my NDS, but as you said there is no temperature shown under System Status. Can Richard shed light on this?

The ndx needs more power than the cdx2. Thats why the old olive xps cannot be used to power the ndx. It also explain why it runs warmer. One strange thing is that the temperature will even fluctuate.
You can borrow the rs232 cable from your dealer if you want to update the software.
Btw, beware of the rubber leg marks if you are stacking them.

Hi Ralph - I run my NDX of its own powersupply and have it on its small Fraim shelf with another layer above - and when on streaming duty it gets noticably warm to the touch.

+1,
see also my topic
When not in use, I put the system input to a preamp input (via system automation) and this keeps the ND5XS cool (but still at over 30W power consumption - is this really necessary, naim?). In contrast, my MacMini uses a more chilled 10W...
Cheers,
Stefan

Stefan, it's a good idea. After tested, the power consumption drops to 40W from 48W if I change input to a preamp input. I will monitor whether it could help lower some temperatures.
