JRiver, JRemote & NDX

Posted by: HuwJ on 08 April 2013

I'm using JRiver as my server to my NDX from my PC and use nStream as the control point. However the usability of nStream is basic and it seems to have problems in both compatibility and native mode. I play mostly from playlists, seldom playing a whole album.

I have JRemote, which in theory would provide a great control point for the system, but it will not work correctly with the NDX.  Going in to a loop of the first song played from a playlist or album. This seems to occur with other non Naim controllers too and seems to be related to the way the NDX pulls songs from the server - being unwilling to accept a server pushing songs to it.

I have approached the developers of JRemote but they do not have access to an NDX to figure out how to fix the issue - though they have come across a similar issue with Sqeezeboxes.

Is anyone using the JRemote successfully in the same environment? How did you get it to work? Can anyone suggest an alternative control point that works in this combination?

BTW I cannot get JRiver to directly control the NDX, the same problem as above occurs.

Regards

Huw

There's a an addin for JRiver called catwalk that makes it possible to use JRemote and JRiver in conjunction with a Linn DS. It is just possible that the author of Whitebear might know how to do something similar with naim. Worth asking him maybe. You should also be able to use JRiver as a straight UPnP server - at least you would get the ability to customise views. And then you could use JRiver as a control point too, though I guess you'd need a netbook - a windows 8 touchscreen one could be nice.

Does the NDX show up as a "Zone" in the left column?  If so, you can definitely "push" to the NDX.

Naim's implementation of UPNP seems to have some proprietary what-not going on.

This is one of the reasons I cannot even consider getting a streamer.  I made my own out of a ultra quiet, little ASRock Mini pc.  Supports full HD video and is, well, you know.... a computer.

And it cost about $700 once I upgraded RAM (8gb) and jammed a 126gb SSD in it.

All that said, I would be surprised if you cannot get it to work.  Someone will chime in.  JRemote works fine as a control point between JRiver and a SB Touch.  I use it often.  It even pushes to Airplay devices without a hitch (no gapless).  I have an Airport plugged into the wall outside for BBQing.

Good luck,

Patrick

I have found the Naim Uniti range to have a pretty good implementation of UPnP. There is something not quite right in the way it announces itself but I gather that will be fixed in the next update (and doesn't trip many control points up). I recall having a looping issue with BubbleUPnP once - something to do with the way gapless playback was implemented... can you turn that off in JRemote? As someone once said "The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from."
