What was the last vinyl you bought?
Posted by: apye! on 18 January 2011
Arrived today in the post:
Dolce Vita: Jonas Kaufmann (tenor)
Anna Netrebko: Verismo - Antonio Pappano / Orchestra dell' Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
Schubert for Two: Gil Shaham (violin) |Göran Söllscher (guitar)
It was about 1980 just before Cds came out got rid of all my vinyl and only use Cds now
When I went away to college my mother gave away the old turntable and my record collection, came home at Xmas to a new house and guest bedroom in yellow and white gingham. I was upset.
Vengeance was mine, 27 years later I'd met my first NAIM system and friend gave me an old P3 , I was buying $200 bunches of good used LPs of groups I knew I liked, Then it was classical and I've moved into early jazz. I love music and I'm retired tho still busy, turning on the system for a vinyl session is pure delight.
Gamba - Rossini Overtures. SXL2266 WBg
Death In June Burial 2016 reisse ltd of 1000 black vinyl 200gr and blue vinyl 150 gr.

The Travelling Wilburys 3 lp box set
Dark Side of The Moon and Animals re-releases
John Mayer - room for squares
Free - The vinyl collection
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - The Complete Studio Albums - volume 1
Glad I have a wife and family that understands me. Now I just need the time to listen to them all!

That's quite a haul. You must have a large or very generous family; maybe both.
I can recommend the Free set, bought it a couple of months ago.
The Wilbury's, I bought the single lp on first issue (also have the 3 CD version). Another good'n.
Haven't bought the DSOM or Animals since I have the first issue vinyl.
Good listening.

I wonder if you'd be kind enough to ask your wife to have a word with mine?!

Lol....Sure that would not be a problem.
Tricky bit now is getting her approval to buy volume 2 of the Petty Studio albums which seems to be selling out fast.
Probably the last purchases of the year for me.

I have eight different vinyl versions of that album Clive...
The 1980 CBS half-speed mastersound LP is an excellent pressing, and considering it is digitally remastered from the dawn of the mainstream digital age, the results are outstanding. If you're into collecting vinyl versions of WYWH this is one to have.
Birdpen - In The Company of Imaginary Friends

Yes I have that one Randy - and of the eight different vinyl pressings I have, it's my favourite version too.

Kevin,
It's kind of a head scratcher isn't it? I mean a digitally remastered LP from 37 years ago outshines the likes being produced today, given all the 'advancements' in digital technology. Time and care taken in the mastering process must be a factor, as well as a loss in the craft of vinyl mastering these days. The lack of emphasis on compression back in the day must also be a positive factor. Whatever the case, the CBS mastersound is tight, clean, precise and tuneful, albeit with a very slight loss of warmth.
first purchases for 2017: not saying that the naim forum had no impact would be a lie !!
and (remained on my wishlist during long monthes)
Double vinyl. An odd collection of singles:
Some used vinyl:
Paul Rodgers - Cut Loose
Donavan - Barabajagal (highly recommended)
Joe Cocker - Mad Dogs & Englishmen
i recently bought a copy of Donavan's Best of LP and quickly concluded I'd wasted nearly 50 years not enjoying his music on the back of an early dislike of Jennifer Juniper on release in '68(?). He's amazing.
plan to play Joe Cocker this weekend.
I did manage to secure a copy of Mobile Fidelity's limited and expensive pressing of Abraxas. Just can't bring myself to open it. Paid an inflated price to get it as the orders exceeded the limited run of just 2500 worldwide. Also a copy of their pressing of Blood On The Tracks. I plan to compare this to my recently acquired original first pressing on CBS.
I agree with previous comments that the CBS Mastersound pressing of WYWH from 1980 is excellent. Haven't played this for a while....(note to self to rectify this)
A busy and exciting weekend of music ahead.

Fantastic album!
Hope you didn't have to pay silly money for it (?)
