UnitiServe + Hi-Res: How do YOU do it?

Posted by: Naijeru on 09 April 2013

I'm the proud new owner of a UnitiServe! After a bit of hair-pulling trying to get it and my NAS on speaking terms, I managed to get off and away ripping my CD collection. So far, so good, but what about my hi-res tracks from HDTracks?

I've created a share for hi-res content and by copying Naim's folder structure and album art conventions I've been able to get the Serve to recognize my hi-res albums, artists and album art. However I still don't have all that gooey metadata goodness that it pulls from AMG or CDDB for CD rips.

Has anyone had success with attaching rich metadata to downloads (hi-res or otherwise) in a network share?

The UnitiServe will NOT add metadata for any tracks other than those ripped on the device from a cd.  This is where you've gotten off the path . . . the device will not do that.  You need to use another program to add metadata.  There are plenty such programs for Windows and OS X; they are talked about on the forum here quite a bit.

So I think that in total you're doing the right things but just need to attend to the metadata yourself.  My recommendation is to fix the metadata BEFORE you add the files to the share, just so that the files aren't indexed for the first time without the data.

I hope that this helps!

Very helpful actually. Can you point me to some of these threads where metadata programs are discussed?

If you are running Windows mp3 tag works fine and is free.

Thanks Claus, but I'm using OS X.

On OS X I use a little free program called Tag to edit metadata manually.  And I purchased a copy of Jaikoz which will scan the files, match them to the Musicbrainz and other databases, and automatically fix the metadata.
